Movie Review: Wilder and Fosse perfect Saint--Exupery characters

I was shown this once for a french class, and was daunted at first by the mildly horrible and over-schmaltzy scenes in the begining with the singing pilot and drippingly sweet little boy. However, real gems of character creation were turned in by two of my favorite geniuses, Wilder and Fosse. Both seem to be born to play these parts. Fosse captures us instantly as the snake in those yellow sunglasses, biting stare, and moves so serpentile one feels as though he will slither through the screen. Wilder has always been a personal favorite of mine, but I dropped my jaw as I watched him as the fox. Completely understanding the wonder, the innocence, the magick of a child (exactly what Saint-Exupery understood), he brings to life such a wild, beautiful, sparkling, wise creature, and brings him straight into one's heart. You lose yourself in those blue eyes and the frantic curls. And you never forget it.
