Movie Reviews of The Little Drummer BoyMovie Review: Terribly neglected holiday classic - 5 stars for film, 0 stars for restoration Summary: 5 Stars
The Little Drummer Boy deserves a place alongside Rudolph and Frosty as one of Rankin Bass's vert best holiday classics, and where it may lack in eye candy and whimsy compared to other holiday favorites it more than makes up for it with a truly powerful and touching story. Now here's the sad part: the print master used for this DVD is absolutely horrible, especially in comparison to all the other Rankin Bass DVDs that have been released. I was shocked to see a picture quality that's inferior to even VHS recorded in SLP mode. Images are dark, murky, and full of scratches. I was even more shocked to see credit given to 3 people at the end for supposed "film restoration." How horrible must the unrestored print have been to get it up to sub-sub-par level? Sorry, but I don't buy it. This film deserves to be restored properly.
Movie Review: Unforgettable Movie! Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is one of the most meaningful, cheerful movies you'll probably ever see at Christmas time. The story is about a young
boy whose parents give him a drum. Soon he can play songs and music and loves his drum. He is very angry when some desert thieves burn down his farm (and his parents), and proclaims he hates all humans. This is the part when people write bad reviews for the movie. One person claimed that the little drummer boy
had mental issues and one person said the movie is frightening.
The movie does NOT show the parents dying, and the lamb incident is what makes the main part of the movie happen; Aaron plays his drum for baby Jesus. It's reality. On TV, The Little Drummer Boy Book II goes on air after this show, traditionally. Please buy this movie; you'll love it if you give it a chance.
Movie Review: Better than Any Sunday Sermon. Summary: 5 Stars
This is a fairly short Christmas special but it was made in the old days when a half hour on TV contained only four minutes of commercials. The best part about The Little Drummer Boy is its wholesome simplicity. The fact that it is so unabashedly religious is its strongest point in my opinion. Chasing the hate out of your heart and replacing it with love is a valuable lesson for all children, so I agree with another reviewer about its being a timeless family classic. It begins rather slowly but the last five minutes are absolutely outstanding and worth scanning back to watch a second time. The quotations from scripture give it its oomph but this also means that it would never be televised today on any of the big three networks. This might be a good DVD to buy because you probably won't catch it for free.
Movie Review: BEAUTIFUL YULETIDE YARN WITH STOP-ACTION ANIMATION THAT GETS KIDS ATTENTION Summary: 5 Stars
This is a sweet story, about a poor little drummer boy who can only offer a gift of song to the baby Jesus. Even toddlers are quick to notice the stop-action animation and the distinctive soundtrack that was recorded by the Vienna Boys Choir. Our toddler called it "Camel" as he loved to see the dancing animals which of course included a dancing Camel.
The cast features voices you will recognize;
José Ferrer - Ben Haramed [Voice]
The Vienna Boys Choir
Paul H. Frees - [Voice]
Greer Garson - Storyteller [Voice]
Ted Eccles - [Voice]
Jules Bass ad Arthur Rankin, Jr. - Directed, Produced, and wrote this christmas classic.
BOTTOM LINE: A Christmas Classic for the whole family that never wears out!
Movie Review: The Best Holiday Special Out There! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a true classic. I saw one review that says it's
scary. Well, my friend, it's not. You didn't see Aaron's parents burning. You didn't see blood and guts when the lamb got hit
by the chariot. This movie is not scary-- it's wonderful.
Well, there's a little boy named Aaron who gets a drum from his
parents. He was very happy until the day Desert Thieves killed
his parents. Aaron manages to save 3 other animals before the farm burns down, plus he's still has his drum. He was really
angry about his loss, so he claims he hates all humans.
He is forced into acting bussiness by Ben, who is a rude, greedy person. But the ending will remain untold until you watch it!
Don't forget to watch the sequel afterwards!
