Movie Reviews of The Little ColonelMovie Review: "Little Colonel" Summary: 4 StarsCharming Shirley Temple vehicle, with Lionel Barrymore as the irrascible grandfather, gruff and blustering but with a soft spot for Granddaughter, Shirley. Bill Robinson is at his best, or should I say, wonderful as usual as the old faithful family retainer and the dance rountines between him and Shirley are alone worth watching the movie for. Great family fare, touching in spots and easy on the eye as well.
Movie Review: Great showcase of Shirley's talents, a must-have. Summary: 4 StarsThe greatest showcase of Shirley's many talents there ever was! Tap-dancing up the stairs with Bill Robinson, crying on cue, being angry and sad and happy, is what makes this movie worthwhile! A young Southern woman defies her father and marries a Northerner right after the Civil War. The couple returns to live in the cottage next to the hot-headed Southerner's mansion, and, of course, with her many charms, Shirley becomes friends with her grandfather and convinces him to reunite with his daughter and her husband.
Movie Review: Nice Movie Summary: 4 StarsShirley Temple is at her cutest, and this film, while slightly corny, has a good plot and even a bit of suspense. The presence of Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, and his tap-dance routines (including the famous "stair dance" with Shirley) make this film stand out from other Temple movies. Lionel Barrymore is convincing as the stern southern grandfather.Drawbacks: overt, insulting racism and racial stereotyping of the Black characters.
