Movie Reviews of The Life & Times of Secretariat, an American Racing LegendMovie Review: The Life & Times of Secretariat, an American Racing Legend Summary: 4 StarsThis DVD was a gift to my sister-in-law. She LOVES Secretariat and enjoyed every moment of the film. If you want to see a true legend in equestrian racing, this is a film for you (so she told me).
Movie Review: Great Horse, High Price Summary: 3 StarsIf any of you are still in awe of Big Red, even after all these years, you will love this DVD. There isn't much new material here. Just about all of it has been broadcast many times on sport channel specials and the producers were unable to clean up the TV footage from 1972-73. The interviews are interesting, but don't provide any new information for fans; but having those interviews and footage all together is great.
One thing: The Life & Times of Scretariat is overpriced at $40. $25 would have been reasonable. I suggest waiting until used copies are available.
Movie Review: *Cringe* Summary: 2 StarsI really wanted and expected to like this - I mean I love that it has the footage of all of Secretariat's races, but the documentary itself does him no justice. This is supposed to be honoring one of the greatest thoroughbreds of all time and the quality of the documentary is crappy - for a $50 DVD I expected a lot more. For Secretariat I expected a lot better. I couldn't stop cringing when they played that cheesy Bryan Adams song in the background to Secretariat's racing footage! Ugh.
Poor Secretariat is probably rolling over in his grave!
It's like they hired a cheap wedding videographer to put this together - Not worth $50 - Wait till they drop the price or something better comes along.
Movie Review: Great DVD for the Greatest Horse Summary: 5 StarsIf you were lucky enough to see Big Red win the Triple Crown, even on TV, this DVD will bring back many of those wonderful memories. Although tapes on the races are on Youtube, they are usually fuzzy; the DVD comes across as clear as the races themselves did. The interviews with Ms. Penny Tweedy, Lucien Lauren, and Ron Turcotte are great. A few things shocked me, like Mr. Lauren knowing Secretariat had an abcess in his mouth and racing him anyway, without telling Ms. Tweedy or Ron. If you want to remember the greatest horse of the century (alright, I didn't see Man 'O War), this is the one to get.
Movie Review: Great horse, wonderful documentary. Summary: 4 StarsI was a horse crazy nine year old and my first introduction to horse racing was Secretariat's Triple Crown. I have read a few books on Secretariat, was lucky enough to meet Penney Chenery, Ron Tucotte, Eddie Maple, Jim Gaffney, and have a VHS tape of all the Triple Crown winners. Yet, I did not think I would ever see any of his non-Triple Crown races, until this DVD. It was thrilling to watch! Secretariat raced in 1972-1973, so the racing film is 30+ years old now and grainy. It is a shame that it wasn't digitally remastered before putting it out on DVD, but this is wonderful video biography of one of America's greatest racehorses. At least, you can SEE his talent and power, instead of just imagining it by reading the books. I did find it a bit pricey for one DVD, but I hope some of the proceeds are going to laminitis research.
