Movie Review: Flynn rides again!

The charmingly naive and multi-degreed Flynn Carson (Noah Wyle) saddles up for a second bout with the Forces of Evil in this TV-movie, which is unashamedly derivative (the opening sequence is almost a direct lift from that of Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade [THX Digitally Mastered] Widescreen) but great fun. When the Metropolitan Library, an unbelievably ancient repository for mythic artifacts ranging from Excalibur to the Ark of the Covenant to the Shroud of Turin to H. G. Wells's Time Machine, acquires a map to the fabled King Solomon's Mines, administrator Judson (Bob Newhart) sends Flynn off to find them. Teaming up with a British archaeologist (Emily Davenport) with even more degrees than he has whose connection to the Solomon legend comes by way of the equally fabled Queen of Sheba, and a native cattle thief (Hakeem Kae-Kazim) whose life they save, Flynn makes his way across half the continent of Africa, realizing along the way that he isn't the only one who wants to find the Mines--and, eventually, that they aren't really mines at all, but, like the Library, a storehouse of ancient treasure, some of it better left alone.
Apart from the headlong pace and wild special effects, one of the great strengths of the movie is the peek we get into Flynn's past, as he encounters his courtesy "Uncle" Jerry (Robert Foxworth), an international importer with secrets of his own, and gradually begins to understand that his late father may not have lived long enough to tell him everything he should have. (What became of Nicole Noone from the previous episode we never learn, though there is a reference to "time-travelling Ninjas.") Flynn is geekily charming and the pace is fast and furious, with the lingering shadow of evil hovering malevolently in the wings. Highly enjoyable.
