Movie Reviews of The LibertineMovie Review: Liberating The Depths of Johnny Depps Talent,by J. E. Siu Summary: 5 Stars
The LIBERTINE is a "Man vs HIMSELF" movie. The character does not want to be the King's Shakespeare if it means being a monarch's monkey. There is a delicate balance when a genius dares to break ranks and risk everything.
Even when racked with illness, the Character Depp plays manages to glow and release a display of the genius that would have been if he had lived long enough and won the battle with his inner demons. He says we will not like him. But we do and we forgive and wish he had not experienced self-destruction walking that fine line. The self-loathing is not as infectious as the character announces it will be. His grace glows inspite of the agony that would drive lesser men to self-pity. The strength of the character is astounding, astonishing. He fails with more grace and dignity that most men. He is a man at war with himself and win or lose, he remains charming, witty and beautiful to behold.

Movie Review: Depp is stunning!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Johnny Depp plays the 17th Century poet, John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester and a beast of a human being with his creative mind and cruel heart. After King Charles II lifts the banishment from London on Wilmot, he hopes the poet will return to the stage with a masterpiece. Wilmot simply wreaks havoc and continues to be his own worst enemy. Depp is splendid, and though Wilmot's character is despicable, we can't stop watching. When the witty Wilmot gets turned on his head by a strong willed actress struggling to tap into her talent on the stage, the wall around the poet's heart begins to wilt. Elizabeth Barry helps mine Wilmot's depth of emotion, but in the end he cannot possess his muse and he's losing his life. The tale comes to a sad end, but it is a beautifully written story of love and loss. In the end, I did like John Wilmot.

Movie Review: Bravo. Summary: 5 Stars
I am in absolute awe over this film. The Libertine is pure genius. I simply cannot believe how wonderful it is. Generally, I have to watch movies in several spouts. This movie had my attention the entire time.
(You can read other reviews for a synopsis.)
The acting alone was marvelous. It was like speaking in rhyme. I could almost close my eyes and hear the orchestra playing the character's melody. I open them again to see the words floating out of a lavish Johnny Depp's mouth. It is marvelous! Johnny Depp is a fantastic actor.
I cannot believe that this is the first time I have encountered Samantha Morton. Where has she been hiding? Her performance as Lizzy Barry alone warrants a standing ovation.
Great acting. Great Film! Bravo.
Movie Review: Depp Steals The Show Summary: 5 Stars
I have to say that I rather enjoyed this movie, eventhough it took a while for it to come to my area. Depp protrays another brilliant character once more with his wonderful acting abilities. As John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester, you are not to like his character and it is stated in the very first scene of the movie so therefore, you know the Earl is more than just a regular person, he is a master of sexuality.
I am also here to tell you that this movie follows very closely to the play, The Libertine, with a few added scenes that were necessary to the movie. If you enjoy Depp in his usual unusual characters, then you will love this movie for he is, as always, wonderful and sexy in the beginning and vibrantly brilliant at the end.
Movie Review: Deep Vulcan MindMeld for Intelligent Adults Summary: 5 Stars
Wow! Johnny Depp, whom I first got to know when I took my kids to Pirates of the Caribbean, is a SHAKESPEARE level actor.
This is a supremely intelligent movie for very smart people that appreciate nuances. It is NOT an X-rated movie in disguise. A few (very few) exposed breasts, but some of the human choreography is reminiscent of Leonardi da Vinci, extremely tasteful and NOT pornography in any way.
This movie held my attention. It aroused a passionate empathetic appreciation of loyalty to life, liberty, wife, love, king, and country. Johnny Depp plays a very complex man, and the nuances of this movie have to be seen to be appreciated.
A keeper. I plan to buy it now that I have rented it.
