Movie Reviews of The LibertineMovie Review: Johnny Depp in his best role yet! Summary: 5 Stars
After reading several negative reviews about "Libertine", I hestitated buying this movie. I finally decided to go ahead and purchase the DVD as a "collector's item" to add to my Johnny Depp movie collection. I started watching "Libertine", always keeping in mind that I would turn off this movie as soon as "it became too bad to watch". However, there was not one scene that I personally viewed as appalling (as described by other critiques).
Johnny Depp's beautifully sculpted face fits right in with this masterpiece of threatrical design. He portrays the relentlessly self-destructive, alcoholic and sex-crazed Earl of Rochester, John Wilmot, in an almost sympathetic way, forcing the audience to feel an emotional attachment to him, especially during his suffering from end-stage alcoholism and syphillis.
The most important criteria for my rating this movie with five stars was the length of the uninterrupted scenes of superb theatrical stage performances by Depp and the entire cast. Who needs theater when you can get a movie like this?
Seriously, some people are cut out to be actors and the rest remain critics....
Movie Review: A superb film Summary: 5 Stars
Remarkable on many levels. Those who are squeamishness about language and content are likely to be horrified. Those who cannot stomach obscene language are advised to steer clear though the language is appropriate in the context of Wilmot and the period. Those who saw it coming from a diet of pirates and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory are likely to be taken aback. It is a tour de force if a flawed one but the flaws are unimportant. It's a brave film about a remarkable man whose self-destructiveness was legend. I would never have credited Depp with the talent to play such a complex character. There were moments of sheer acting brilliance on his part. There were also moments of over-acting but you can forgive him those when stacked against the other. Samantha Morton who played Elizabeth Barry was superb as was Malkovich. They all were. It was a very moving film and one I was glad to have caught by sheer accident. Some decry the often drab scenery, the low-budget approach, even the occasionally inept focus but I think they miss the point. I will be buying the film.
Movie Review: Eerily Entertaining Summary: 5 Stars
I rented this movie on a lark - ONLY because of Johnny. I had, in fact, not even heard of it until I saw it sitting on the shelf at our local video store.
I must admit that I was not sure what I was getting myself into - but as soon as the opening scene rolls, Johnny takes that sip of what could only be the cabernet sauvignon that he adores, and starts into his character - I was mesmerized.
Not only is he beautiful as ever to look at - even with the horrid pasty makeup that they had to use to get the Victorian feel to this movie - but his accent was perfect and his mannerisms flawless.
It is not a fairy tale and in some places is very hard to watch - but for all of the nastiness of some of the situations - I don't remember breathing through the whole movie. If you get the chance to see this movie - I very much suggest that you do - you will be watching and Oscar-worthy performance from one of the most under-rated actors of our time. It is Johnny in all his glory and splendor - uncomparable!!!
Movie Review: For open eyes and open hearts only......... Summary: 5 Stars
I just watched The Libertine on Direct TV last night and have logged on to buy myself a copy. Suble, complex and nuanced in script, direction and performance. At the beginning our main character played by Depp says we will not like him in the opening monologue, and that as we watch, we shall like him less.
At the end perhaps that is so, but for me at least, liking him became irrelevant. Instead, I was left with respect -- for a life imperfectly led in the extreme yet still punctuated throughout with more than a few flashes of brilliance, for the struggle to live with integrity and authenticity as the real impulse behind so much of the debauch, and for the self-declared moment of redemption near the end, a highly personal redemption that can only be bequeathed by oneself upon oneself and never by another, all underscoring the link between Libertine and Liberty, both words rooted etymologically in the Latin "libertus" = "free".
The film left me deeply, deeply moved, and I highly recommend it.
Movie Review: Depp at his best Summary: 5 Stars
If you are a Johnny Depp fan, this work of art is by far at the top of the list. It is thrilling to see an actor so very talented and it is my opinion that there is no one in the field today that could have pulled this role off. It is indeed no comedy, and as dark as the night but to come away from the theatre unable to stop raving about his performance puts this movie on my list of viewing over and over again. It should have been an oscar for Depp. You may have never heard of the poet or of his short and sordid life but you WILL remember Depps protrayal of this man. True to life in costumes, scenery, props, conditions of the time and even down to the lighting. They may not be pretty or to our liking but the morals and lives in that period of time have been documented in history. Have an open mind, concentrate on Depp, his talent, go back in time with him in this period film and you will find out your answer to his question, "How do you like me now?" Yeah, he's got my vote.
