Movie Review: Brilliant, Dark, Hypnotic, Riveting. A MUST SEE!

The Libertine, is not your average movie, it is a special kind of film from the genre that it represents. I had wanted to see this movie for a long time after several failed attempts from the studio that distributed it is finally here and all I can say is that I'am glad that I finally got to see it. This movie is brilliant in every way I thought. The film's dark tones is perfect for the period which is the 17th century if I'am not mistaking. The costumes that the actors wear in the movie are great and of the time. The writing and directing of the film is exquisite. However the main reason why anyone would want to go see "The Libertine" is because of the brilliant acting. Everyone in the cast did a very good job the supporting actors were all believable in their roles and John Malkovich as always did a splending job this time in the role of King Charles II, Now, the real reason to see this movie is because of one actor and one actor only, JOHNNY DEPP. He is beyond spectacular and his performance is above all surreal and extraordinary. As a huge Depp fan that I'am I've always loved Johnny's movies because he is an actor of innate talent and wisdom. He has done some great work in the past (Blow, Donnie Brasco, The Ninth Gate, Before Night Falls and Charlie and The Chocolate Factory to name a few.)The Libertine is thus far his greatest performance capture on film I believe and the transformation that his character John Wilmot,(The Earl of Rochester) undergoes towards the end of the movie is beyond belief. The make-up that they used on his face is incredible and completely believeable. The Oscar should of been given to Johnny for his masterful performance. I cannot conceive that he wasn't even nomiminated in the Best Actor category at this year's ceremony. If Johnny Depp ever deserved an Academy Award for his acting is definately in this film. I saw Philip Seymour Hoffman in Capote and he gave a superb performance and he was indeed Truman Capote and although I was happy that he won the Oscar for Best Actor for a role which was complicated enough, I believe that Johnny was cheated out of the Best Actor category because after seeing him in "The Libetine" his performance although entirely different from Hoffman's naturally (two different roles altogether) should of won because the Earl of Rochester was far more complicated and misunderstood than Truman Capote ever was. Now, that being said forget that Johnny didn't win (his Oscar will eventually come to him) go and see the movie. You will really enjoy it I think and if you don't well I won't criticize you because everyone has their own opinion and are allowed not to like a movie if they choose to go that route. If you like Johnny Depp as an actor you will love him in "The Libertine" and if you don't like him, well... if you go see this film his performance will probably change your mind. I can't wait for this movie to come out on DVD as I will be purchasing a copy of this fantastic and startling movie. Five stars is not enough, I would give it ten if there were ten to give. The Libertine will blow your mind from beginning to end and we have the acting brilliance of an actor like Johnny Depp to thank for that. Go and see this movie, you will not be disappointed.
