Movie Reviews of The Legend of Zorro (Widescreen Special Edition)

Movie Review: This Could Have Been so Great!!!
Summary: 1 Stars

In an age of sperheroes as real "heros with hangups," this movie is at least fifteen years behind the times. This is a cheesy incarnation of the otherwise potential-filled Zorro character. What a waste of acting talent, money, hope, and my time this movie was! What do you think, Hispanics are shallow and want Soap Operas???

Movie Review: Could Have but did not Renew the Zorro Franchise
Summary: 2 Stars

Zorro is a franchise with utterly tremendous potential, especially as the U.S. increasingly Hispanisizes. While this movie has some elements to commend it, it does not come close to meeting the potential of the franchize. Without doubt, the core problem was the scriptwriting of this particular film.

The writer has yet to overcome the idealism that marked earlier Zorro films. Here we see Zorro as quite superhuman in action-abilities, while the writer at the same time tries to humanize him through is family troubles and his zeal for the poor and opressed. This contradiction is seriously discordant with the rest of the film.

The idealism driving this film can be seen in even its villian--his name is not memorable. He was nothing short of cheesy, as was Zorro's son. Each "cheesy" element must be dealt a categorical death-blow in future Zorro films.

Many of props were good, such as those that attempted to portray Zorro as within the aristocratic class, e.g., Zorro's home was indeed realistic of aristocrats of the very loosely historical seting of the film. However, the props elsewhere seriously lacked realism. The fireworks at the party were so sterotypical Holywood it made me want to turn off my DVD player, go barf in the bathroom, and commence to use my Zorro disk as a frisbee along with my pre-Batman Begins Batman-franchise disks.

It is essential that the Zorro franchise obtain a realist scriptwiter. The Batman franshise has renewed itself for probably decades through such a move. The Zorro franchise has not.

The greatest accomplishment of this particular Zorro film is that it weakly keeps the franshise within the public conscienseness until a truly remarkable and realist Zorro film can be made. While the film is a descently fun evening for un-sophisticated viewers, it's shortcomings are simply pathetic compared to its potential. The Zorro franshise and Holywood is capable of so much more than this.

Movie Review: "Zorro" with a zzzzzzzzzzz
Summary: 2 Stars

Yeah, yeah, sequels are supposed to suck, so I shouldn't be shocked that this "Mask of Zorro" follow-up followed the pattern...but, still, I was very disappointed. "Legend" took the old-fashioned fun of "Mask" and modernized it with cliche takes on fatherhood, divorce (!) and patriotism. Yes, patriotism. Apparently, according to this film, California would have never been voted into statehood if it weren't for Zorro saving the ballots... Also, the villain is French. But none of this tops the jaw-dropping stupidity of Zorro's pint-sized son engaging in a ruler duel with his strict teacher. Ay caramba!

Movie Review: For entertainment purposes only...
Summary: 4 Stars

Sure, the historical inaccuracies abound, and the stunts are over the top, but who cares? Good guys are good, bad guys are bad, and the action is lots of fun. Adrian Alonso is not only a cute kid, but a good actor in the role of Joaquin. Hard to believe he knew no English before making this movie. And it's great that his character isn't just a prop, but a plays a pivotal role in the progress of the story. The only disappointment I felt was during the break-up, Catherine Zeta Jones kind of mis-acted it. There seemed to be a lack of love in the scene - more bile than sadness, which would have accompanied the breakup of two people who are supposed to love each other madly. But the movie keeps you guessing, and swinging along for the ride. Loads of fun and I look for the next one....?

Movie Review: "Zorro is a relic of the past. Gentlemen, the future."
Summary: 4 Stars

Maybe it was due to the fact that the sequel was too far apart from the original, seven years to be exact, that is did minimally at the box office. THE MASK OF ZORRO was a sure-fire-hit-blockbuster when it first came out becuase it was something new, different, original, and fierce. I guess it's just hard to psyche up an audience that's been waiting for this sequel for almost a decade.

But, Some of the wonderous elements that made Zorro such an idolized character got swept away in a new direction. Now, don't be alarmed. Both movies are directed by the same man, a msiter Martin Cambell who did well in introducing us to zorro the first time around.

This time, we find that Zorro has been fighting the tyranny of crime for quite a while, now having a son that has the spirit of Zorro-filled adventures already leaping out of his small little heart. Zorro's wife, CATHRINE ZETA-JONES, is apparently fed up with her husband and demands that he hangs up the mask for good. And he does for a good long while, until forces are risen to destroy America with an explosive that none of them have ever seen before.

Some 'Bad guy's' in this movie are your stereotypical, run of the mill, forgetable faces that leave no real lasting impression or have a long history but are introduced quickly to move the plot along. Watch for a cameo of the famous man responsible for bringing frankenstein's monster to life in VAN HELSING. He is none other than Shuller Hensly.

This movie has the scent of a Zorro adventure but only lacks a little in the punch. Agreeably little to the point where the most I could subtract was only one star. This movie was done well but had a bit more special effects than the last one. And also, I like that the threatening danger was almost playful in this second chapter of Zorro's life. But, if you really wanna know, this movie should have been called the mask of zorro and the first one should have been considered the LEGEND of zorro.

But, aside all that, it's worth a look to compare the two and see if they are equal.

But, when watching this movie, you get enlightened by the new gags and the new threats. be sure to pick it up.

Enoy!
