Movie Reviews of The Legend of Zorro [Blu-ray]Movie Review: Zorro Returns! Summary: 3 StarsThe Legend of Zorro is the sequel to the late nineties film, The Mask of Zorro starring Antonio Banderas (obviously as Zorro) and Catherine Zeta-Jones as his unconventional kick-ass wife, Elena. It takes place during the late 1800s during the time when California was just beginning to convert to statehood. Zorro is saving the day as always, but this time his wife has had enough. Some trouble in paradise ensues, political conspiracies arise, and big pyrotechnic effects result from semi-terrorist plots.
However, there is so much more to the story than this. There is a somewhat deep denouement, and the storyline is creative. I can't give too much away about this movie, but I really liked how there is a reason behind every action and I appreciated how the writers portrayed how far a woman would go to save the man she loves.
The only things I didn't like were not really that big of a deal; there were some cheesy lines, melodramatic acting, and some scenes where you would REALLY have to suspend disbelief in order for your mind to accept them. Overall, it was much better than I thought it would be.
Movie Review: Good kisser! Summary: 5 StarsAntonio is a great kisser isn't he? I liked this one almost as much as the first. After I watch it again, I may like it more. True some of the stunts were a little over the top, but afterall, it's the "LEGEND" of Zorro. We got to know a lot more about the couple. I liked the depth of their characters. The movie has humor, action, love, Antonio. As the special features in the first movie DVD point out, he's the first Spanish actor to play the part. It is a flamboyant, passionate part. Only a Spaniard could do it justice. Love the chemistry between Catherine and Antonio, and between Antonio and his horse. My husband is in love with Catherine this year, and I with Antonio, so it's a great movie for us to watch together. Watch the movie with someone YOU love! OLE!
Movie Review: Pleasantly surprised Summary: 4 StarsI'd heard many complaints about this film. It was billed as a silly Saturday matinee. There was supposedly almost no swordplay. Everyone and his sister was purportedly an expert in self-defense. No visual attempt was made to hide the fact that stunts were performed by doubles. The spark between Zorro and Elena (Banderas and Zeta-Jones) had fizzled. And critics didn't like the fact that the two leads were divorced, thus ruining the cherished Zorro family. And so forth and so on.
For a long time, I just assumed this was a bad sequel to a film I've always loved. But curiosity finally got the best of me, and, with low expectations, I ordered "The Legend of Zorro." But, as the title of this review states, I was pleasantly surprised! There are great action sequences. Its seriocomic tone is faithful to that of the original film. Although the swordplay may not be as brilliantly executed as in the first film, there is plenty of it, and it's particulary pleasurable to see Catherine Zeta-Jones deftly wielding a sword (as she did briefly in the original movie). Yes, a Catholic Father, a peasant lady, and Zorro's son are able to fend for themselves---but for a critic to say that everyone in town is Zorro-esque is a gross exaggeration. As for the stuntwork, it was excellent, and the special features bear witness to the fact that few doubles were actually used---and it was never obvious when they were. As for the relationship of the two leads, they glow when the story allows. As for the divorce, it's a plot device: this movie has a happy ending. If you loved the first Zorro film, you must complement it with this sequel. It's a hundred times better than you've been led to believe!
Movie Review: Oh, what might have been ... Summary: 3 StarsOver the years, Hollywood has taught us not to have much faith in sequels. Legend of Zorro is no exception to that formula. While not horrible (if you're interested enough in the franchise, its certainly worth seeing once), Legend lacked all the charm, sharp wit, exhilarating action sequences, and tight plot that made Mask of Zorro so popular.
The story opens ten years following the events of Mask of Zorro. Impoverished California is holding the vote for statehood. Naturally, there must be a loose cannon out there somewhere who is willing to go to extremes to stop the ballots from reaching the governor. The resident psycho shows up in the form of Jacob McGivens, convincingly portrayed by Nick Chinlund. So, it's Zorro to the rescue. We get the idea this was supposed to be his last gig, but now he's not so sure, and Elena's upset. Alejandro/Zorro doesn't spend enough time with their young son Joaquin. He's taking risks that aren't necessary any longer as statehood is imminent ... because apparently statehood is the solution to everything. So, we're faced with a messy situation, a divorce, Alejandro's drunken binge, and Elena's courtship with smooth talking Frenchman Armand who - surprise, surprise - turns out to be the big bad of the flick. All in all, I whole heartedly agree with the Amazon.com review that states there is just too much plot here. I gave the very brief, bullet point's version. Toss in all the subplots, twists and turns, and ridiculous scenes such as Joaquin's ruler duel with his teacher, and you've got a hodgepodge of plot that never knows which direction to go.
The acting is admirable, considering what the cast had to work with. They were likely just as confused by the direction of the movie as the average viewer. Still, Antonio Banderas shines in a part absolutely tailored to fit him, Catherine Zeta-Jones is always a treat, and Rufus Sewell has proven time and again he suits the cool, collected, debonair villainous role just fine.
Still despite the talent, the actors just couldn't save this script. Nothing ever seemed to click for this movie. Nothing sparked. Nothing moved me to really sit up and pay attention. What made Mask of Zorro great has vanished, and we're left with a cheap imitation merely trying to capitalize on the popularity of the prequel. Sorry, but in order to ride the coattails of a previous success, you really can't wait seven years. Perhaps if the sequel had been tackled sooner, something better would've shown up on screen. But I guess we'll never know as this was likely the death of the recently revived Zorro franchise.
Movie Review: Z FOR ZORRO? Summary: 2 StarsThe legend returns but not like he used to be. He is protecting California at the year 1850 he is a family person in San Francisco with a wife and a son. As a family person he has kind of family problems. He can't keep his promises towards his wife and she going to see another man. Well well this is definitely not the Zorro I knew and I did feel that one of the best heroes of my childhood is turning in to something different. The only similarity I found is that he is still after the bad guys and still protecting the good but I am not sure anymore about his future.
For a project of $80 Million dollars I was expecting much more I do not recommend this movie and I will give it 2 stars only for the beauty of Banderas and Zeta-Jones.
