Movie Reviews of The Legend of Hell House

Movie Review: Classic Horror At It's Finest
Summary: 5 Stars

The Legend Of Hell House is many horror fan's most beloved haunting film of its day. Roddy McDowall and Pamela Franklin star and do fantastic jobs with their roles. Still, being so outdated, it is rather difficult at times to refrain from seeing the characters as anything short of campy. Regardsless, there have been numerous replicas and rip-offs but none compare with the original, which is sadly too often the case. It's about a troup of paranormal investigators/psychics who enter the notoriously dangerous Hell House which once claimed all but one participant in such a previous investigation. Well, at least that's the general idea. Though upon watching the film you'll find the characters will contridict some of that information themselves. I love this film but personally thought the script needed a little more fine tuning.

Movie Review: My Kind Of Horror
Summary: 5 Stars

If you love movies like The Haunting(original), The Changeling, or The Innocents; then you'll love this movie. When I first saw it, I thought it was a continuation of the original Haunting. I was so glad to see that it came out on DVD. I've been looking for a copy of it for some time (and it's even hard to find to rent!). This movie is definitely one of the great Haunted House style movies. This movie gives my wife chills and we both need to watch something a little "fluffy" to get it out of our minds before bed. I can't wait till the Changeling and the original Haunting comes out on DVD. This is a must have movie in the collection of those that like movies in this vain. For me it's not so much the horror and scare (even though that's a thrill) it's the origins of why these things happen that intrigues me. Finding out why the hauntings go on, or what happened in the past to cause this.

Movie Review: very creepy!
Summary: 5 Stars

this is a classic ghost story film. it's english-from the 70's the basic plot is.....hell house is a large old country house in the english countryside. it once belonged to an insane perverted millionaire named belasco. it's reputed to be haunted and last time an expedition entered only one person walked out alive. now a new group of people-a scientist, his wife and 2 mediums, one of which was the sole survivor of the previous expedition must enter the house and try to discover the root of the evil. this film doesn't give much in the way of gore but instead manages to conjure up an incredibly creepy atmosphere with a genuine sense of dread due to the excellent direction and acting. watch this in the dark and it will scare you witless-very much in the same way the woman in black and the original version of the haunting did. buy it now and treat yourself to a proper horror film!

Movie Review: CLASSIC HORROR
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the kind of 'old school' nerve-jangler that requires the viewer to fill in the blanks, unlike the splatter-fests that dominate the horror genre today. Whether or not this is as good as THE HAUNTING ( the original version ), THE CHANGELING, or THE INNOCENTS is something that has been debated by lovers of haunted house movies for decades ( and probably will continue to be debated for many more ). What is undeniable, however, is that it definitely bears favorable comparison to the aforementioned masterworks.

Hell House is a place where shadows slither, and move with sinister, sinuous intent, and things don't just go bump in the night. The malevolence that seethes, but never really slumbers in this brooding mansion is always waiting for fresh meat. Truly something to dream about....

Movie Review: Better than "The Haunting"
Summary: 5 Stars

Maybe it is because I have read the book and saw this before "The Haunting", but I find this the stronger movie. Sits in the unique position of being the first movie to pit science against the supernatural in a believable way.

One of the best features of the movie is the soundtrack, an eclectic mix of oboe, bass clarinet, french horn and percussion that sets the mood beautifully... Which is amusing since most every review I've seen always refers to it as an 'electronic' or 'over-synthesized' soundtrack... evidence that most people wouldn't know a contra-bass clarinet from a baseball card in the spokes of a bicycle. Sorry folks, that's pure accoustic!
