Movie Reviews of The Legend of Drunken Master

Movie Review: Superior US version
Summary: 5 Stars

Whats with all the bashing of this dvd version? This version is much better than the original version which I have not seen. The American distributor knew what they were doing when they edited this for western audiences. In fact, they shouldve edited more of the last fight scene. It went on way to long for us over here. We want our fights short and simple, not complex with people flying all over the place. Now click helpful on my review so i can be a top 100 reviewer. thanks.

Movie Review: A FACT, MAYBE YOU DIDN'T KNOW
Summary: 3 Stars

Most older Hong Kong films were shot without sound to save time and money. Jackie didn't record the original Cantonese track for the HK version of the film. But still, I was lucky enough to see the original HK version of the film in theaters and the American version isn't anywhere near as good as the original HK version. Even though the American release of the film does include Jackie's real voice for the English dub.

Movie Review: Best actions scenes of his career!
Summary: 5 Stars

Don't get this movie wrong because it's one of his older ones, because I know I did. I first saw it at home on a movie channel, passively, but it quickly got my attention, especially at the superbly choreographed fight scenes. There were plenty of them, and whilst I won't spoil it, the very last fight scene(s) were so thoroughly thought out with such creativity that I saw this is a *must* buy for any action and/or martial arts fan!

Movie Review: And why does everybody say that THIS is their favorute jackie movies ever?`
Summary: 4 Stars

To everybody who says this, I ask, have you seen drunken and young master? Because these 2 are foar superior. I am not trying to discredit your opinion, but as far as modern movies go, this may be his best, at least since people in america have known who he is.

So the story is about jackie beating people up when they are trying to force workers to work overtime without getting paid, then they fire them when the job is done and they don't need them anymore. The director Lau Kar Leung(I think Jackie left his name on this, I mean he was freaking in it) plays a part of an officer who is investigating something that is going on with the factory with people smuggling ancient artifacts out of china. So in other words the story kinda sucks(at least in this cut version it really sucks) and the main thing to watch is the action. I kind of hate it when this happens becuae there is not enough fights to have this bad of a story. I can only think of like 6-7 good fights in this movie. Now once again we may not be getting all of the fights because this is the cut version. Character wise the only person who stands out to me is the late and great anita mui. She was BY FAR the best character and actor/actress in this movie. So at the end we do get a really spectacular fight, but my favorite one was where they hired the axe gang to take out jackie. Jackie is in absolutely top form here, not like he wasn't in the other scenes, they just didn't mix in stunts and fighting like they did in this scene. I KNOW that jackie had to break at least one bone shooting this scenes, I don't know this factually, but you watch this and tell me if there is any known actor in the world who can do this. And oh yeah, this is like 16 years after he made the real drunken master. Something that I don't really care about is the fact that they don't even mention the REAL DRUNKEN MASTER in this movie. The real drunken master was simon yuen, and his son yuen woo-ping did all of the crazy footwork. So there are really 2 drunken masters, except on screen they only show the old man as the DM. So, even though NOBODY can do drunken style like jackie can on screen, woo-ping could pull it off even better, but he's not an actor. So I am just saying that it would have really helped this movie if they at least mentioned the drunken master, but now everybody just knows jackie as the drunken master because they have not seen the original and have know idea who simon yuen is. And of course they KNOW who woo-ping is, they don't realize that it was his dad who pushed this movie over the top to become a huge blockbuster in china.

If anybody wants to see a far superior movie to this than make sure you check out the original and if you want to see a a movie that is slightly better than drunken master than you should check out the very unknown Dance of the Drunken Mantis. This movie brings back the real drunken master and introduces us to the northern drunken boxing champion. yes that's right, we get a drunken master that doesn't have to be doubled, Hwang Jang Lee. And I won't leave his sidekick corey yuen out either. Now this movie has Chief fox from iron monkey playing the jackie role, and this would easily have been a top 10 movie of all-time if they could have gotten jackie, or Lee yi-min, or the kid from 7 steps of kung fu. But instead we just get a top 50 all-time kung fu movie. And I will let you know right now, and seriously, BEWARE OF THE DRUNKEN MANTIS STYLE.

So yeah, the movie is pretty good, not the story and the action, and anita mui's delightful character gives it the 4/5.

Also the dvd quality has a great widescreened picture with the all-important french language track and english for those of us who wanna try to listen to it. I would definitely advise you to seek out the chinese verion if this really is one of your favorite movies, because this is almost as bad as the jet li dubs.

AND DRUNKEN STYLE IS A REAL GUNGFU STYLE FOLKS, IF MASTERED IN REAL LIFE YOU CAN BE JUST AS DEADLY AS JACKIE WAS. Kungfumagazine.com has some good articles on it if you are interested in martial arts.

Movie Review: U.S release doesn't compare to the original
Summary: 2 Stars

The U.S release is a far cry from the original, and more of an insult than anything else.I can tell everyone though, for a fact that the original theatrical release (spoken in original Mardrin&Cantonese&subtitled in English) is the S&^%!?*^!.It's not only entertaining and hilarious, the fight scenes are absoloutely INCREDIBLE.So,if you get the opportunity, buy the VHS tape.I did about 6 years ago,and although it's not dvd quality,it's still a fantastic film.I suggest checking out EBAY for it on DVD,you may be surprised and find the original out there? This is a MUST HAVE film for any Jackie Chan/Martial arts fan. It's a perfect blend of action and comedy.I suggest staying away from the editied/dubed U.S release,it's been butchered...find the original,it will be worth every penny even if it costs a bit more.
