This is the type of movie that you don't take serious.
As usual, a group of famous comic strip characters get together ala "the Magnificent 7" to save the world.
What sets this apart from other comic turned into cinema fare is the tongue in cheek way the characters are handled.
This is sheer fun and action...the kind we remember when life was easy and being bad meant swiping an extra piece of cookie or blaming your kid sister.

This is a perfect movie should one choose to teach a course on how to fail at successfully adapting a screenplay from another work.
This film is a hideous, horrible mess. It doesn't play well, it doesn't look good, it's poorly writen, badly directed and has plot holes you could sail the Nautalis through.
It's a pity, cause the source materiel for this was an excellent graphic novel called, oddly enough, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Vol. 1. In that book, which if you haven't read, you should, we have Moriarty fighting Doctor Fu Manchu for control over London's criminal underworld. It shows the league being assembled and going about their business. It's a much stronger plot and far more entertaining (to be fair, apparently the rights to Doctor Fu Manchu were owned by a rival studio, so they couldn't have him for a villain, but surely they could've done the same story with a different bad guy?).
There were some good things about the movie. Sean Connery is always fun to watch, and his version of Allan Quatermain was very good, as was the actor who was playing Nemo (forgive me if I don't remember his name). The design on the Nautalis was pretty spiffy as well, and despite the heat the film took for the look of Mr Hyde, it was at least somewhat faithful to the book.
However these few good things are overwhelmed by a litany of bad ones. For example, Tom Sawyer. Much is made of the immortality that Mina Harker and Dorian Grey have, but little is commented on the amazing ability that Tom Sawyer has to look like a young man in his early twenties when, in fact, by the time the movie takes place the character would be in his late fifties or early sixties. A friendly rivalry between him and Quatermain would've been much more interesting than a fuax father/son relationship.
Also of note is the size of the Nautalis compared to the canals of Venice, and the car chase through the city's streets. Amazing how they apparently managed to get a car from the 1930's back to the 1890's. Yes, I know they were supposed to be more advanceed, but I somehow am not buying it.
This tries to be a good movie, and fails. It winds up feeling like the sort of diaper-gravy normally spewed out by the directorial anus of someone like Michael Bay, only absent the mediocre levels of talent he posesses (say what you will about Bay, and there's lots to say, at least his movies aren't as boring as this. A brutal assault on one's senses and intelligence, but not boring).
People who want a good series with fictional characters appearing all together would be well advised to read not only the books this movie was based upon, but also to check out Anno Dracula, The Bloody Red Baron and Judgment of Tears: Anno Dracula 1959. These books contain such characters as Doctor Jekyl and Doctor Moreau (presiding over an autopsy together), Rotwang from Metropolis (Restored Authorized Edition), Count Orlock, Hamish (James) Bond, Biggles and the Shadow all in one series. Far more entertaining than this movie.
Then again, so might a colonoscopy be...
