Movie Reviews of The Last Starfighter (Widescreen Collector's Edition)Movie Review: Great nostalgia from my 80s childhood Summary: 5 Stars
I have a soft spot for this movie, and when it came out on DVD I immediately bought it. I must have watched it dozens of times when it was on HBO in the 80s. Watching it again so many years later, it still retains its heart and charm. Sure, the effects may seem very dated but the film stands out as as one of the first to use CG-created ships and environments. Everyone in the film does a great job as well. Robert Preston is excellent as the smooth-talking alien, Centauri. Dan O'Herlihy has a great time playing navigator Grig, and star Lance Guest has two roles, one of disenchated teen Alex Rogan and the other an android double that takes his place while Alex is taken into space to train as a Starfighter. Guest seems to have a lot more fun with Beta, the android role, but makes Alex believable as someone trying to break free of the trailer park where he grew up. (Don't forget Catherine Mary Stuart as the love interest).
The specials features are a welcome addition for fans. I watched every special feature on this DVD the day I got it, and enjoyed learning about the making of the film from the documentary.
This movie is a great bit of nostalgia with a lot of heart.
Movie Review: Playing video games will get alien civilizations to notice you. Summary: 5 Stars
The Last Starfighter marks a milestone in film special effects being the first film to utilize a computer to achieve the great majority of the visual FX shots. They may be quaint now and even dated, but the rousing story, loveable characters and dynamically choreographed action scenes still stand up nicely.
Sci-Fi fans along with video game junkies should love this film for the action and eye candy, while the coming of age theme along with the family angst of the capable lead provides the rest of the audience with plenty to get involved in and enjoy. Besides the groundbreaking computer work, the make-up, costumes and prosthetics used to realize the various alien races are equally impressive. Robert Preston's mischievous alien rogue Centauri provides the film with much comic relief and is a standout performance.
This great disc is chock full of informative extras and is well worth the investment.
Movie Review: For no other reason than to feel darn good! Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is definately not an Oscar winner. It is not going to win any script competition. It does not have awe inspiring graphics. It does not have Super Incredible battle scenes. BUT...What it does have is one heck of a feel good plot and the excitement one feels as a child all packaged up in a great time. This is a popcorn and Coke movie. A movie I watch over and over again and have owned on VHS, LD and now on DVD. The soundtrack by Craig Safan has one of the best opening themes ever and carries on through the movie with a spirit one comes to find addicting. This is a movie for people with imagination. It is for anyone who dreamed they could be great heros and do daring deeds. It definately gets the 5 stars as a movie I can always toss in the DVD and feel great afterwards. Thanks Jim
Movie Review: Great 80's era movie! Summary: 5 Stars
Watching this movie is great, if for no other reason to remember back when analog 15" CRT monitors and 400 baud modems were considered cutting edge.
Movies like this and Wargames also remind me how, even as recently as the 80s, you can have a fun movie that didn't involve hyper-sexualized teens dressed like Megan Fox in Transformers. Rather, you have a plot driven movie that played on the kind of innocent wonder back in the day about how technology would change people's lives and lead to a new future.
The CGI used in the film looks exceedingly dated, but I remember when this film and Tron came out, I thought it was cool as heck. Admittedly, some parts of the movie are a bit cheesy, but if you can ignore that this movie is a great example of an 80's sci fi classic.
