Movie Reviews of The Last Emperor (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]

Movie Review: Not great
Summary: 2 Stars

Video quality wasn't the worst or best I have seen, movie is rather boring. Overall I would not recomend this at all.

Movie Review: Don't waste your money or support this truly below average quality release by Criterion
Summary: 1 Stars

This is one of the worst Blu-Ray releases I have seen. There is so much grain in 98% of the movie that Criterion should be disgusted with their blatant opportunism.

I guess I won't be buying any of Criterion's Blu-Ray releases in the future until I see a Blu-Ray review confirming whether or not Criterion chose to release a DVD version on Blu-Ray or actually mastered a new version from the original film itself.

Don't waste your money on this garbage release!! Especially if you already own the DVD version which actually has less grain/noise. The small amount of added details in the occasional close up scenes do not even come close to making up for the distraction caused by the sheer volume of grain/noise. If you have a decent video setup at all, you will find yourself constantly distracted by the noise particles all over your screen.

Shame Criterion! Shame! You owe everyone who bought this a full refund or a rerelease. Even the original Blu-Ray releases of Stargate and 5th Element weren't as annoying, because at least they had the excuse of inadequate time to get the early Blu-Ray releases out, and after the fact they allowed us to send in our initial release versions for re-mastered copies of the films after the fact. Criterion has no excuse, they need to rerelease this properly and give everyone who bought a copy a chance to send it in for an exchange...

Movie Review: About the ratio.
Summary: 1 Stars

This is a copy of the review I just made for amazon.co.uk about the UK release, which is not an alternative to this one, because it also altered the original format of the movie. I expect that the Criterion relase has a better image, but still, I will avoid it, just wating for an edition that respects the ratio in which the movie was originally shot. Here goes the UK release review, just in case you may be considering an alternative to this one:
Nothing to be said about the movie, it is just a masterpiece. But this tranfer is awful. Scene by scene comparison shows that it is not signficantly better than the upgraded dvd. Details are blurry, and the DNR is so excessive that it is distracting. Plus, following the US release, it has cropped the sides to show an artificial 2.00:1 ratio instead of the original 2.35:1 ratio. A disaster. I will not bother to return the blu ray, because it was very cheap, and the mailing would be as expensive. But, if you are reading this, do not bother to buy, stick to your DVD and wait for an HD transfer worth of this movie, as I will.

Movie Review: Do NOT order this!
Summary: 1 Stars

I cannot express how LIVID I am over being duped into buying what I thought was the widescreen theatrical cut of THE LAST EMPEROR on Blu-Ray.

From the criterion site: "We do not windowbox Blu-ray (-) movies."

Incorrect. The aspect ratio has been changed. Sides trimmed off slightly. I don't care if it was with auteur approval. I don't care if Jesus approved of this trim job. If I wanted a cut, I'd bring the thing to a barber!

For $30, there should have been two discs: the 'theatrical' release in widescreen, and whatever other versions y'all felt inclined to release.

This reveals bald contempt for the customer and simple disregard for cinema.

Do NOT order this.

(A phenomenal movie with a history of being butchered in VHS/DVD releases.)

Movie Review: I hate the disc case. It's cheap cardboard crap
Summary: 1 Stars

I am only rating the cardboard disc case which for blu-ray is (in my opinion) sub standard. I have become a bit of a collector of blu-ray movies and love the nice blu-ray blue plastic case. This disc was sandwiched into a cardboard case which collapses so that it is hard to read the side label when placed onto my library shelf of discs. I find this greatly disappointing. Not going to affect world hunger or peace on earth, but I did not like it. The movie was quite good however. I am only rating it one star to express my anger over the cheapening of the collector case.
