Movie Reviews of The Last Dragon

Movie Review: When you got that GLOW!
Summary: 5 Stars

The Last Dragon is not your everyday Kung Fu movie...its way more than that. It's a Kung Fu-adelic, Breakdancin, body popping, butt-kicking disco scene flick. This movie showcases many stars like Taimak, Vanity ( Purple Rain and Action Jackson), Thomas Ikeda, Julius Carry, Christopher Murney, Faith Prince (Spin City), Glen Eaton and Leo O'Brien. This movie never go the credit it deserved and now its time for it 'shine on' again.

This movie is about a young Leroy Brown attempting to complete his training in martial arts. Along his journey he must face many of his fears and to realize that some things we look for are already within us waiting to be found. Along the way he falls in love with a dance show star and must confront his nemesis, the 'Shogun' of Harlem, Sho'nuff. Get ready for a lot of laughs, a awsome 80's soundtrack, breadancing and very well done martial arts scenes. Many of you Spin City watchers will notice Faith Prince who plays Eddie Arcadian's girlfriend. Vanity was also seen in Purple Rain.

Yeah, Yeah I know that there are many people out there that knock this movie and attempt to put it down. Complaining of a poorly written script and cheezy dialouge. But hey this is from the 80's and this movie is a cult classic that never got the credit it deserved. However the fact that it is being released shows that there is a high interest in people wanting a re-release of this movie with me being one of them. I cannot wait to see the movie shine on DVD.... Pre-order's your today and don't forget the Soundtrack is being re-released on CD as well.

Movie Review: CHEESY,CAMPY '80s FUN
Summary: 5 Stars

Every once in a while, you need some camp in your life.
A movie that is very campy, dated, and cheesy yet fun and strangely
convincing, that would explain 1985's "The Last Dragon"(billed as
"Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon" when originally released).

A cheesy,overproduced Motown fantasy/musical/martial arts flick
which is loaded with signs of '80s glam and slang(watching it seventeen years later,it's a scream!).Starring are Tamiak(whatever happened to him),Vanity,William H. Macy(who later was featured in Oscar-totters "Fargo" and "Magnolia"),Faith Prince,
and the adoreable Keshia Knight Pulliam(best known as Rudy Huxtable on "The Cosby Show").

The plot is basically the same as the Bruce Lee classic that the film shares it's name with, just with VERY '80s elements such as big hair, tacky '80s clothes, shallow '80s music videos, and DeBarge(whose "Rhythm Of The Night" is featured in the film)! Notable charcters include the unforgettably campy Sho-Nuff(For the younger folks out there who haven't seen this movie-Busta Rhymes parioded him in his 1997 video for "Dangerous") and Leroy(Tamiak)'s hilariously smart-mouthed little brother Ritchie.

Want serious martial arts fare spruced with pop music? You might not get that here but if you want good, gimmicky '80s fun with
a great sense of camp,"Last Dragon" is the perfect movie!

Movie Review: Too Much Fun not to Love!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Man, I love this movie. I must have seen it a hundred times since I was a kid in the 80s. This movie the whole family will love! Richie is the best, I remember tying each other up in ropes and trying to pop-lock out of them, most times it never worked. Bruce Leroy was so fine and so cool. He was such a nerd, but man did he make me want to "teach him some moves" and I was only 10 when the movie came out. Needless to say, I hated Vanity even more after that movie. First she had Prince, now she got to kiss Taimak. Vanity is a minister now, all is forgiven. What ever happened to Taimak, I saw him in a music video shortly after the Last Dragon came out, but nothing since.

Anyway, this movie is just too much fun. All the karate scenes seem to take themselves so seriously and the party/street scene is just wild and crazy. Eddie Arcadian's goon has a tank of piranah or something. His girlfriend is a cartoon character. I still find myself singing "Dirty Books" 20 years later.

You can't watch this movie expecting it to be like Enter the Dragon or something like that. This is in it's own genre. Recently Kung Fu Hustle has tapped into the campiness and kookiness of this type of movie. The Last Dragon is AWESOME, great for a thousand laughs!! "Directa your feetsas to Daddy Green's Pizza!!"

Movie Review: A New Classic
Summary: 5 Stars

The scenarios are slightly dated now... but anyone who grew up in the 80's will appreciate the humor of the cultural role reversals... the Action is good the dialogue is bad but overall its a fun movie... Parents bewarned that there is some moderately unacceptable language including the use of ethnically divisive terms, which in the context which they are used and considering the time it was created are genenerally non-offensive. The violence is mild with little blood and no gore. The main character "Bruce Leroy" is a serious fan and "student" of the Late Bruce Lee and emulates his character in everyway possible. The antagonist is a martial arts "master" and self proclaimed "Shogun of Harlem" - Sho'Nuff. Sho'nuf demonstrates every stereo type of a bad martial artist, while bruce demonstrates the martial artist so many of us want to be. However, the true villan in this flick is the typical amoral white business man Eddie, who tries to manipulate everyone involved including Bruce & Sho'nuf.

The music score is very 80's dance, and is great to break dance to...

Its not oscar material but a must have for all Martial Artists.

Movie Review: "I'm looking for LEROY!!!!"
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is too funny! It came out right before Vanity turned her life around and became a Christian..putting the music industry behind her for good. This will be the final time you'll ever see her dressed up, made up, and having that flirtatiousness about her. Who could ever forget Eddie Arcadian and his protege singing "dirty books...i found 'em, i found 'em." The Debarge did a song call "rhythm of the night" really the family haven't put a song out TOGETHER since this. I've always wondered why, because they had so many big hits. Taimak this was his last performance in a movie, he did Janet Jackson's video "let's wait awhile" and was never seen again. Even "Cockroach" from the Cosby show was in this movie. He was one of Leroy's brother's friend, this same guy played as a regular on "martin". "Rudy" which is Keisha Knight-Pulliam played Leroy's little sister. So you can see this was an all star cast. Think you've got a good DVD collection...you don't unless you have this movie.
