Movie Reviews of The Lady in WhiteMovie Review: The Lady in White delivers Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is one of my favorite recent thrillers. It starts out slow at first, but picks up momentum appropriately. There are a number of little mysteries woven into this tale, which all untimately connect to the lady in white.
Lukas Haas shows his talent here at an early age. He does very well in carrying the story through to the end, which isn't often a child star can accomplish that.
The special effects in this movie are done in minimization... just enough to make it believable, no over the top effects here. The first visualization of the first ghost is quite memorable, and shocking.
There are some very controversial subcurrents running through the movie also: racism and child abuse. These are handled well, again, not overdone but enough to deliver some tense, uncomfortable moments.Comic relief, sometimes not effective, is actually done quite well here... with a few chuckles to ease the tension.
It is a roller coaster ride of a movie with fine acting and very intricate, suprising plot. Catherine Helmond does excellent in a serious role here and was quite a suprise to see!
Highly recommended for ghost story or thriller lovers!
Movie Review: A Classy Haunting Summary: 5 Stars
"Lady in White" is a must-have for anyone who loves a truly GOOD ghost story.
Told through the eyes of a child - now an adult - the story opens with the grown child revisiting his hometown. Now a successful writer, the adult-who-was-the-child begins to spin a rich account of his life as a child, concentrating especially on one fateful Halloween and the life-altering events that followed.
The boy, Frankie, brilliantly played by Lukas Haas, is the youngest of a loving Italian family, including his father, his grandparents, and his older brother, his mother having passed away some time before.
It would not be fair to potential viewers to go into a detailed account of the story, as the unfolding of the plot is a large part of the tension so wonderfully achieved all through this haunted chiller. I shall just say that there ARE, indeed, ghosts, and it is, truly, SCARY.
Beautifully scripted, excellently acted...a real treat for those who appreciate a good ghost tale!
Movie Review: Excellent suspense/thriller both for both adults & kids. Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of those classic kids' horror movies that can also scare adults who are anxious for the safety of the young hero. It can also mesmerize them in wonder by the elegant, effective, and highly creative way that the director handles what could have been a trite or hackneyed subject in others' hands. Although this film was shot on a budget it is hard to find any scene that would have been better if more money had been available. In comparison I found the Harry Potter series may have the latest fabulous effects but that this simple story forms a more entertaining and stronger connection between the audience and the hero.
My daughter likes this film much more than the other kids' thrillers that I've bought for her such as "Something Wicked This Way Comes," and "Witches." Although those are also excellent films the Lady in White combines the haunting mystery of Gothic tales with the realities of having modern serial killers, while also providing moments of comic relief for both children and adults.
Movie Review: A bitter sweet movie that is hauntingly appealing Summary: 5 Stars
This movie always makes me tear up. When I was younger I saw some scenes in the movie that left me choked up. A black man in the movie was accused of harming the main protagonist and other children.
This movie exposed me as a young child to reality such as racism and cruelty however the ending left me more optimistic and full of hope.
This movie isn't very graphic in it's depiction of violence but the theme is there.
The movie if anything will teach your children of the grim realities of life however it's not so grim and depressing to the point of haunting your psyche after the credits roll.
I think the Lady in White is more of a mystery than a horror movie per se.
Movie Review: One of the best films ever made. Summary: 5 Stars
I remember seeing this film as a young girl, and its impact has never left me. This is one of those films that is not well known so naturally it gets overlooked. This movie is truly scary in the sense that it plays with your emotions. Sure Friday the Thirteenth, Halloween, etc. are scary, but they rely on superficial violence and gore to lure their viewers. This film touches the human psyche; it brings out a realization that not all people are good and that there is pure evil in all places. When a film can touch a person deep inside, that makes it an unforgettable classic. I would recommend anyone, expect very young children, to view this jewel of a film.
