Movie Review: WARNING: MORE BOOK THAN MOVIE, NOT ENGLISH

It has already been pointed out but not often enough. This movie is not in English. Very little is English. Subtitles are in English but they are hard to read and are removed faster than I can read them. Yes, I can read reasonably, have 2 degrees, write a column, am a published author, and an avid reader. The captioned words done in yellow were also hard to read against some of the background.
The story may be good. I can't comment on that because the reading of the movie was so impossible I gave up after 1/4 of the way through. I skipped ahead to additional scenes and discovered all of them were in a foreign language with English captions. Interesting that the theatrical trailer is completely English with no subtitles. Intentionally misleading. I usually enjoy the visual aspect of movies, with my degrees being in visual arts, but all I was able to see was the segment directly behind the captions, no time while reading to enjoy the scenery.
Since there are many positive reviews, I am in the minority. But if you don't enjoy reading scripts while trying to watch a movie--stay away from this one. If you want the story, I'd suggest the book rather than the video. The words don't disappear from book pages. Besides, several reviews have mentioned the book is better than the movie.
Bottom line: Both my thumbs are down. One star because 1/2 is not an option. The half is only because the DVD comes in a nice hard plastic case. Needless to say, I'm disappointed.
Summary of The Kite Runner
Amir is a young Afghani from a well-to-do Kabul family; his best friend Hassan is the son of a family servant. Together the two boys form a bond of friendship that breaks tragically on one fateful day when Amir fails to save his friend from brutal neighborhood bullies. Amir and Hassan become separated and as first the Soviets and then the Taliban seize control of Afghanistan Amir and his father escape to the United States to pursue a new life.
