Movie Reviews of The King of MasksMovie Review: Absolutely Brilliant!!!!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of my favorite movies of all time.
It is about a Chinese man, an artist of mask-making. He creates beautiful and disturbing masks and then puts on a show for people using the masks as characters. He is recognized as a true king of an almost lost art in China. How he creates the masks and makes them seem alive is a mystery. He lives in relative poverty but is only wanting for one thing, a male heir to whom he can pass down the tradition of his art.
He decides to adopt a young male child to become his apprentice. He does this and the relationship between master and apprentice is explored. There are some life challenges, scenes of incredible closeness and amazing twists.
I give this film my very highest recommendation.
Movie Review: Fantastic film. Have some Kleenex handy. Summary: 5 Stars
I saw this film first in the theaters. I didn't quite know what to expect but have enjoyed the current surge of moving Asian films. The performances of the male lead and especially the young girl will move you to tears. It's one film everyone should see.I recently purchased the DVD knowing full well about the negatives. The audio on the DVD is terrible (as bad as mono in my opinion). And yes, the film is cropped. Why Columbia would wreck such a great work by producing a shabby DVD version is beyond my comprehension. They could have released a widescreen version as well but they didn't. Columbia needs to get their act together and redo the DVD. Anyway, I'd give the DVD a 1/2 star but I can't fault the movie one bit which easily deserves 5 stars.
Movie Review: wonderful film set in historic China Summary: 5 Stars
This is a wonderful film, set in 1930s Sichuan, about an old man who is the last living practitioner of face-mask changing. He laments that he has no male heir on whom to pass down his art, and decides to visit a blackmarket where children are sold. There he finds a wonderful young boy who is thoughtful, enthusiastic and intelligent. Life seems wonderful and the old man proudly introduces his new grandson to the people he meets, but things don't go as planned and he rejects the child. The consequences of his bigotry reverberate until a dramatic action forces him to rethink his traditional views.DVD treatment is below average. The movie can be heard in Chinese and subtitled in English, French or Spanish. The only extra is a trailer for the film.
Movie Review: Beautiful, and extremely emotional moving experience-a RARE treat! Summary: 5 Stars
You MUST get this movie!!! Not only superbly acted and incredibly beautiful--this is one of the most moving films I ever seen actually based on fact and how China treated their women, which also included foot binding. It has great, incredible emotional impact, next to "Twenty-Four Eyes", it is absolutely guaranteed to make you cry. You cannot possibly not get away from shedding tears if you watch this! YOU MUST GET THIS MOVIE!! It's a total emotional experience and one you will never forget. I wish I could rate this higher than a 5. I cannot tell or describe just how beautiful--and incredibly powerfully moving--this movie is. Words will cheapen the experience of it. YOU MUST GET THIS MOVIE!!! It's awesome!!!! A pure treat!!!
Movie Review: A Chinese Whale Rider Summary: 5 Stars
An excellent film that makes a signficant yet non-polemic statement about societal attitudes about human worth being based on gender. Although obviously more extreme and blatant in China, the cultural base of the West that prefers the voice and opinions of the male has residual consequences that make moments of this film as poignant for a Western audience. Even if a viewer ignores the gender politics (and doesn't notice the thematic similarity to "Whale Rider") the film is worth seeing, especially for the joy of watching these two actors and for the glimpses of China. Having seen "Farewell, My Concubine" will help with preparation and background in seeing the (fe)male operatic performances through Western sensibilities.
