Movie Reviews of The KillingMovie Review: Kubrick's film noir groundbreaker. Summary: 5 Stars
"The Killing" is a stunning piece of film noir. What's even more stunning is that this movieis only Kubrick's third major release! It features an excellent cast(Tim Carey is awesome as the too-cool killer for hire). Claustrophobic camerawork, and a shocking ending make this movie a must-see for Kubrick fans, as well as crime fans. Chances are, if you're watching a movie about a robbery gone awry, the ideas were derived from "The Killing." NOTE: excellent script by Jim Thompson.
Movie Review: Kubrick Makes a Killing Summary: 5 Stars
Stanley Kubrick's oldie but goodie suspense flick about a daring racetrack heist is brilliant! Though the film is black and white, he is able to use his lighting skills well. The film's characters are developed very well from start to finish. Sterling Hayden's unmistakable voice and acting talents add the cherry to this sundae of a film. It also has one of the best endings I've ever seen in a movie........but I'm not giving it away!
Movie Review: A mean, gritty heavyweight of a movie with an O Henry ending Summary: 5 Stars
Sterling Hayden stars as a career criminal who has put together a brilliant scheme to heist a racetrack payroll in broad daylight with races in progress. He uses multiple events to distract authorities from the main event. As things progress, he overcomes doublecrosses and bad luck to get within inches of the brass ring. The ending is shocking and unforseeable. An Oceans Eleven-type movie without the color or the comedy.
Movie Review: epitome of the gritty crime film Summary: 5 Stars
I knew this had a good reputation; it's frequently mentioned in books about cinema in general, and film noir in particular. Nothing prepared me, though, for the propulsive plot, great acting and the tangible atmosphere of menace so important to these films. I thought this blew away contemporary caper movies, and stood up to more ambitious films like Quentin Tarrantino's. This is really, really good!
Movie Review: The Killing Summary: 5 Stars
Skillfully paced, edge-of-your-seat entertainment, accented by vivid characterizations ( Elisha Cook and Marie Windsor stand out as a dysfunctional couple ), and stark, striking cinematography from Lucien Ballard. This picture put Kubrick on the map. Watch, and witness the budding of a cinematic genius. Co-scripted by the director with Jim Thompson, who also wrote "The Grifters."
