Movie Reviews of The Killing

Movie Review: That's what I'm talking about
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the real deal, a classic noir with all the elements: a nasty-assed femme fatale who sets up the denouement with her greedy scheming; a spineless feckless husband manipulated by his weakness, and a frozen, soulless anti-hero. Filmed in and around San Francisco the movie feels gritty and tense and claustrophobic. I have seen this movie many times, but the ending still causes me to jump and to exclaim profanities. Excellent! Love that!

Our story: a recently released con hatches a plan to knock over the local race track. He chats up his henchmen, one who spills the plan to his unhappy wife, who spills the details to her boyfriend. Wifey and boy toy decide they want the money for themselves, and their involvement causes it all to go wrong after the heist has been completed. Ex-con grabs mousy hunny and they try to run off with the money, but fate intervenes.

This is a top drawer noir that has stood the test of time. Highly recommended.

Movie Review: "The Killing" is a killer of a movie.
Summary: 5 Stars

The Killing is the classic film of a bunch of rag tag people thrown together to rob a race track. This is the first film by Stanley Kubrick and it is a very well done film noir for having such a low budget. The film gathers all the aspects of a film noir as the lighting and black and white feel of the movie add to the ganger scheme that Johnny Clay has thought up where no one will get hurt. Marie Windsor plays the femme fatale Sherry Peatty which is why her husband, George Peatty, played by Elisha Cook Jnr, is willing to get involved in such a dangerous scheme for her approval.
The way the movie is set up makes it a little hard to follow at first since it is constantly jumping around a time line, but once the audience gets used to this element of the movie it actually helps tell the story. The movie has everything a good film noir needs: greed, crime, betrayal and, of course, the femme fatale.

Movie Review: A superb example of film noir
Summary: 5 Stars

The Killing is a story about an ordinary man caught up in an elaborate plot to rob a racetrack. Johnny Clay, an ex-convict, carefully orchestrates the plan to take the money, and includes George Peatty in the plot. Under pressure from his wife, George caves and tells his wife about the plan. Unbeknownst to him, his wife is involved with another man, Val. She tells Val of the plan. After the successful completion of the heist, Val shows up to the meeting place of the robbers, armed. Gunshots resound.

Good lighting and an understandable and interesting plot help drive this film noir to greatness. The lighting and set design reflect the inner turmoil of the characters as they struggle with their internal greed and selfishness, while the plot keeps the movie flowing and entertaining. This movie surely deserves its place among the classics of film noir.

Movie Review: Kubrick's First Classic
Summary: 5 Stars

The Killing is a great crime story. Sterling Hayden leads a group of nobodys trying to get a leg up on life. The plan is to rob a local horse track. Hayden has made sure to cover just about all his tracks and this leads to a spectacular finally where the plan is excecuted.

Before Quintin Tarrentino told stories out of sequence Stanley Kubrick did in his 1956 classic The Killing. The influence from this film can be seen directly in Tarrentino's films. The editing is flawless so the audience never losses track of what is going on, but they don't ever really know what is going on in the first place. The direction and the cast are fantastic. This film is timeless and can still be enjoyed like it was made yesterday. Fans of Film Noir, crime dramas, and Kubrick fans should all definately check out this movie.

Movie Review: The Killing
Summary: 5 Stars

Stanley Kubrick's The Killing is an amazing moving picture that depicts exaclty what a film noir should be. It ofcourse is filmed in black and white but that is only one aspect that plays a role in this gangster racetrack schemed movie. The lighting for shadows helps to build the feel of the dark, evil acts of Johnny Clay's perfect scheme where "no one will get hurt". Marie Windsor plays a femme fatale, Sherry Peatty, that has not been see all too often in this type of film. Though she does hold the usual atributes that a femme fatale must hold, she also holds a cold trace of annoyance that only helps develope why her husband , George Peatty, is so desperate for her approval of him and her love. The Killing has all that one is looking for in a film noir, crime, greed, shadow and ofcourse the woman.
