Movie Reviews of The Keys of the KingdomMovie Review: A must see movie Summary: 5 Stars
The movie is about a Catholic priest who leaves the USA to come to China to serve the people. Gregory Peck plays this role excellently. When the priest reaches land he is greeted with anger and someone throws a rock at his face. A young man comes over to help the priest and they become good friends. The Ruler of these Chinese people comes to the priest asking him to cure his son. He goes to the Ruler's house and makes an ointment to put onto the boy. As he is doing this the Ruler and the people who are there watching give strange looks on their faces as if to say they don't believe in this. The next day the boy is cured, which brings joy to the Ruler and the people. Nuns arrive and start a school. The young Chinese friend of the priest takes him to where the church once stood, which is almost level to the ground because of an attack during World War 2. Soon all of the community comes to help rebuild the church. Time passes and the priest has grown older. Vincent Price, playing the role of another priest tells the priest that he has to leave and go back to the US. The people are saddened when they hear this and so is the priest because he and the people have drawn close together. One of the clergy that is higher up than the priest decides to let the priest stay, so the clergy leaves and the joy of the people to have the priest stay is a fitting climax to this movie.
The movie is heartwarming and as I watched it I quickly made Gregory Peck my favorite actor. This movie touched me deeply. I am glad to have this movie among my collection as it truly is a classic. Thomas Mitchell is an elderly priest and because he is Irish he brings comedy to the movie.
Summary of The Keys of the KingdomA marvelous spectacle spanning six decades and two continents, The Keys of the Kingdom is the glorious epic that introduced audiences to screen newcomer Gregory Peck. After losing his parents and his childhood sweetheart to tragedy, Francis Chisholm (Peck) joins the priesthood and devotes himself to a life of service and compassion. But Chisholm?s unorthodox beliefs raise eyebrows among his superiors, especially Bishop Angus Mealy (Vincent Price). And when he is sent to the farthest reaches of China to rebuild an abandoned mission, Chisholm faces his greatest challenge of all: to tame a hostile land, win over a superstitious people and save his parish from an invading army. Nominated* for four Academy Awards®, including Best Actor (Peck), The Keys of the Kingdom is a ?towering film stamped with greatness? (The Independent).
