Movie Reviews of The Karate Kid IIMovie Review: A good sequal to a great movie Summary: 4 Stars
Karate Kid II is not as good as the first, but sequals rarely are. Karate Kid II is very enjoyable. Some think that part II and III should have been switched around, and I agree with that. I think this would have been a better end to the series, with a few minor changes maybe. Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita give great performances once again. Daniel and Miyagi are awesome characters. I think it's cool how they were able to make a series where two people so far apart in age are such great friends. Anyway, in Karate Kid II, Daniel san and Miyagi go to Okinawa after Miyagi gets word that his father has become very ill. To make matters worse, Miyagi has a problem with Sato, his former best friend. Really, Sato has a problem with Miyagi, over an old girlfriend. Daniel ends up having a problem of his own with Sato's nephew, Chozen. I can't recall the guy's name that played Chozen, but I think he was awesome! Why didn't he receive more roles?? It's a mystery to me. The last fight could have been better, but it works. Great movie.
Movie Review: excellent screenwriting tool... Summary: 4 Stars
Most are divided on this sequel, but if you look at it deep down, some elements are better than the first film. First and foremost, Daniel is not protected by the confines of a tournament anymore. Or a nice enough bully who kicks you and walks away. This film's tagline in 1986 was "This time, the combat is real". And that is the core. In the end, Daniel's new foe wants him dead, and this time neither Miyagi or "points" can save him.
Even the storm sequence, which in another film would be hokey time-filler, is actually a device to bring Sato and Miyagi together again as friends. As well as drive the final rift between Chozen and Daniel. And the tea ceremony just an excuse to kiss? Not if you recall Kumiko saying during Miyagi and Yukie's ceremony, "They are falling love again". Kumiko was not only telling Daniel she wanted to be intimate, but that she was falling in love with him. So many great set-ups and pay-offs for the viewer.
So if you're new to writing watch this film again if you don't know it by heart :). (...)
Movie Review: KARATE KID PART 2 IN NOT DOO DOO! Summary: 4 Stars
This is a pretty good sequel! It doesn't quite have the magic of the first film, but it does have a beautiful new setting in Okinawa. Macchio and Morita are great again in this "Rocky" type underdog movie. Like "Rocky" the sequels are kind of formula, but very watchable 3 1/2 stars!
Movie Review: Best of the Karate Kid movies Summary: 4 Stars
This was the only movie in this series I wanted on DVD. This movie is very
romantic, and the exotic setting just makes it even more enjoyable. I
actually liked the movie because of the romantic part of the story rather than the fight scenes. Great DVD!
