Movie Reviews of The Jazz Singer (Three-Disc Deluxe Edition)

Movie Review: A Great History of Early Talking Pictures
Summary: 5 Stars

What makes this latest issue of 1927 Al Jolson's "The Jazz Singer" so great is the accompanying DVDs and printed materials detailing the history of early talking pictures, and the emergence of Warner Bros. Vitaphone as the producers of the syncronized sound/picture landmark movie: "The Jazz Singer". The documentary material on the 3-DVD set includes Vitaphone shorts of many of the great stage acts of the late 1920s, including Burns and Allen, Baby Rosemarie, and many others. Worth the price of this set alone are two rare and wonderful color talking picture scenes from the lost early musical movie: "Golddiggers of Broadway". Anyone interested in the history of early talking pictures should definately buy this DVD set.

Movie Review: Very Informative And Entertaining.
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm not that into "the oldies" but I really enjoyed the documentary DVD. Very well done. They have so many experts talking about how movies got their voice. All intermingled with old footage. Very informative. I would recomend for all school audio vidio clubs and college film classes.

Movie Review: Buy It For The Shorts! Overlook the Missing Extras
Summary: 3 Stars

Short and sweet: the restoration work on "Jazz Singer" is very impressive, but the real reasons to buy this set are the Vitaphone shorts, from 1926 (!) to 1929, recently restored by UCLA in collaboration with the loving preservationists of the Vitaphone project. These priceless records of Vaudeville performers - whose careers would soon be cut short by the very medium that preserved them! - provide a fascinating glimpse at a vanished form of American entertainment. Beware of one technical glitch: the "Tip-Toe Through The Tulips" number from the almost completely lost "Gold Diggers of 1929" is listed on the menu for disc two but is not there - not the first time Warner has rushed out a collector's edition with errors (you will see only the Finale which has been released previously on LD). Quality is great but quality control counts, too. So this 4-star review is docked one star for sloppiness. The documentary on the dawn of sound could easily have been edited to one hour's length - a few too many talking heads abound, and it is taxing to sit through in its entirety.

Movie Review: The classic original movie with sound for the first time
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a clasic movie that was the first to have talking in the movie.

Movie Review: Wow -- just one small caviet
Summary: 5 Stars

I agree, this is the best boxed set I have ever purchased.I just found this on the internet however:

"Next we get Gold Diggers of Broadway Excerpts. The 15-second and 43-second area offers two segments of this lost early talkie. We get Tiptoe Through the Tulips and Finale. Or we're supposed to see those. If you activate Tip Toe, you'll see Finale, and if you select Finale, you'll find a ballet clip from The Rogue Song. Warner Bros. will correct this on future pressings and replace your copy if you get the wrong one."

This may not matter to you. I have e-mailed Warners, and also "The Vitaphone Project". I am told Warners will replace the disc, but probably only after the new year. Also, many people are just as happy with "Rogue Song", since this is an excerpt from a long lost Laurel and Hardy movie.
