Movie Reviews of The Jane Austen Book Club

Movie Review: Even the husband liked it
Summary: 4 Stars

When Jocelyn (Maria Bello) holds a funeral for her dog, her friends Bernadette (Kathy Baker), Sylvia (Amy Brennerman) and Sylvia's daughter, Allegra (Maggie Grace) decide they need to do something to help her have a life outside of raising canines.

When Bernadette meets Prudie (Emily Blunt) , a distraught high school French teacher, outside of a Jane Austen film festival and they start to discuss forming a book discussion group, that becomes the solution.

Sylvia discovers pretty quickly that her husband Daniel (Jimmy Smits) wants to end their marriage on a high note. He's leaving her for one of the partners in his firm. Allegra opts to move back in to help her Mom.

Meanwhile, Jocelyn meets Grigg (Hugh Dancy) at a hotel bar when she's going to a dog breeding conference and he's at a sci fi convention. She sees the handsome young man as a distraction for Sylvia.

And thus the book club begins. We see the members move through Austen's six books and plot complications that Jane herself would approve of. I won't give anymore away, but suffice to say my husband and I both very much enjoyed the film. "Jane Austen Book Club" is definitely a chick flick, but the two men in this audience were laughing as hard as I was.
