Movie Reviews of The JacketMovie Review: We have all the time in the world Summary: 4 StarsWhat's the difference between 1993 and 2007? I don't know, they look exactly the same. If only there could have been a way to distinguish the two eras visually, because as the movie stands now, you wind up not even caring if he's still alive in 1993 or travelling to 2007. All they did was have little Jackie a child in one era, and a fetching young woman in another.
I don't know, to me it was a little creepy that Adrien Brody meets the little girl when she's, what, 8? And instantly he's touching her like crazy. Her mother, Kelly Lynch, notices this, and screams like a shrew at him. She's unsympathetic, but she's right on target. In subsequent scenes it's clear he can't take his hands off little Jackie. And then to have her grow up and fall in love with Jack all over again, what's with that? I expected him to say, "I've been waiting for this since you were eight" when they fall into bed together (yuck, and he reveals his nasty little skinny emaciated rib body, i guess she didm't look south of his nose).
However, THE JACKET made you think and that's a plus. I just wonder if the screenwriters bit off more than they could chew. The mystery of how Adrien Brody was able to cure the little autistic boy never did get solved, it continues to mystify on a mobius strip of time. "How did you know?" "You told me--in the future." "You were the one to tell me--in 1993." And what about that mysterious head trauma? Once Adrien Brody realizes he's going to die of a head trauma in 4 days, he ransacks heaven and earth, past and present, to find out who dealt the blow. Once you see it happen, you're like, "That's it?"
On the plus side, Daniel Craig is out of this world and looks, in the madhouse scenes, just like the middle-aged Jack Kerouac. Mackenzie Phillips is great. Kelly Lynch looks super, they should have added her to the cast of BASIC INSTINCT II.
What about Brad Renfro, poor thing? Was he supposed to be in the movie longer? Maybe in the original script Brody would track him down and find out what really happened in the car with that cop. But maybe working with Renfro wasn't as much fun as the filmmakers thought it would be.
It was great having Daniel Craig, the new James Bond, in such a prominent supporting role, and then, as the credits play, you hear David Arnold's treatment of one of the great Bond theme songs, "We Have All The Time in the World," as sung by Iggy Pop! Coincidence? Or time travel?
Movie Review: Standing Ovation? Summary: 4 StarsRemember those movies you watch with your friends but come out feeling alone and lifted? Or those movies where the last 20 or so minutes of the film baffle you with their sweet emotionally profound dialogues? Films where your head is in such a state of whirl that you're almost gutted with beauty?
Well, The Jacket made me stand up and clap. The last half hour of the film is not only gripping but it shows why Adrien Brody is who he is. There is something queer about the look in his eye and his imperfect yet perfect nose or is it just me. His smile, whether you like it or not, is powerful in it's depiction of both mystery and the opposite.
The Jacket is a calm yet gravitating film. The direction is intelligent and the sets are just apt to portray the film and it's characters. It did remind me a bit of Butterfly Effect, Back To The Future and in some ways, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.
The only slight drawback of the film is Keira Knightley's acting. Otherwise, it's a certain 9/10
Anyhow, just so you can compare and understand why you need "the jacket" (I own the dvd now)
Imdb.com Rating - 6.9/10 [geez the opinionated world :) ]
My Rating - 8.5/10 [watch asap, ignore haters and philistines]
Movie Review: How can an Ashton Kushner movie be better? So sad! Summary: 2 StarsWhat's not to love? Brodie, Knightley, Leigh, Kristofferson, etc. in a hip sc-fi-kinda movie!! It's not that the movie is bad, but if you want a VERY similar movie, then Butterfly Effect is better. It fills in the details, has more twists, and at least tries to answer some of the 'what the heck is happening here?' questions.
Seriously, ativan and sleeping in a drawer causes time travel??? Well, the future must be loaded with every stressed-out '50s housewife on Valium or any benzodiazepine. And Knightley's character accepts a time travel story nearly automatically? ABSURD and this from someone who loves The Adventures of Baron Muchhaussen!
This movie should/could/would be great! If only the writer had gone with a bit more story...seriously, there are nearly five minutes of some absurd flashes of light in Brodie's pupils- if I wanted to see that I'd take some LSD and buy some glowsticks. There was so much they could have expanded upon- from crazy pych experiments to the crime that gets Brodie in trouble. Oh, and don't make Knightley fake an American accent ever!! She has beauty and talent, but an American accent? Nope!
Love these actors? ...then try something like The Hole for Knightley or Dummy for Brodie.
Movie Review: Amazing Movie! Breaks fresh ground in Sci-Fi genre! Summary: 5 StarsOkay I'll start with the biggest problem I have with "The Jacket". Somehow, it got pushed into the horror genre and as an effect is advertised and discussed as if it is a horror film. Yes the film is chilly and dark and twisty but it is not a horror film. In fact, it is a really bad horror film if you label it as such, like The Matrix would be a bad comedy, if you were to call it that.
The Jacket provides a really fresh spin on the popular time travel sub genre in sci-fi. The story is told well and is paced accordingly considering that most of the film takes place in a mental institution. Adrien Brody and Kiera Knightley have great chemistry as well and the surrounding actors provide a great addition to the cast. Especially the talented Daniel Craig as Brody's nuthouse buddy. he plays the best nuthouse personality I've seen since Brad Pitt's character in Twelve Monkeys.
From beginning to end I enjoyed the film. It provides a captiviting begining and a very satisfying conclusion, with lots of great connecting bits inbetween as we see the characters come together and weave a very original story of morals, medicine and the quest of one man's ambtition and how it affects the hero and a herione.
5 stars and two thumbs up all the way.
Movie Review: The Jacket Summary: 4 StarsI recommend this movie for those of you who like a good freaky thriller.
Adrien Brody was great.
A customer of mine recommended the movie to me because I mentioned
how much I loved Pulp Fiction. The only thing they have in common is jumping
back and forth with the story, so pay attention you won't want to miss a minute.
ENJOY!!!
