Movie Reviews of The Jack Bull

Movie Review: The Best Western I've Seen In A Long Time!
Summary: 5 Stars

We watched this movie on HBO 4/25/02. What a great western! John Cusack was fabulous as Redding! John Goodman did excellent in the part of the lawyer. Great story, acting by everyone. In my opinion, this movie beats "Silverado," the last "great" western, all to pieces! One of just a few movies that I MUST have in my home library. A classic!

Movie Review: A great unknown film
Summary: 4 Stars

This is an outstanding film. I cannot believe that it is not better known. I have always liked John Cusack but was unaware that he was this good of an actor. Never thought of him as a rugged he-man type but he plays a good one. This is not only a great western but a great film in general that would appeal to almost anyone. L.Q. Jones is great as a mean S.O.B. Where has he been hiding? Highly recommended.

Movie Review: Cusack for President? I completely agree...
Summary: 5 Stars

"The Jack Bull" is another movie that displays the amazing acting talent of John Cusack. There are times that I am disappointed that Cusack doesn't seem to parallel in accolades with actors such as Cruise, Crowe, and Hanks. But then I think about that and I have decided that Cusack is far above and a much better talent than the aforementioned. "The Jack Bull" is a perfect example of why. A movie written by his father, "The Jack Bull" is an excellent display of good vs. evil. Beautifully written, the story becomes three-dimensional with some of the best performances I have seen from Cusack and John Goodman. A definite emotional film, the displays of ethos, pathos, and logos are just right...not too Hollywood and not at all dull. As a person who is not a fan of the traditional Western genre, "The Jack Bull" proves that one should not decide from films in the vacuum of a particular genre. I will admit, I have been quite smitten with Lloyd Dobbler for many years. Yet I have seen that Cusack's acting talents are so malleable, that he, too, does not act within the vacuum of a genre. Forget the fact that I have adored Cusack's movies for many years, this movie is definitely worth owning...not just watching once.

Movie Review: Marvellous Western adaption of a German novel
Summary: 5 Stars

In 1810, the German writer Heinrich von Kleist published his novel "Michael Kohlhaas", the story of a horse trader, who wants justice with all, even illegal means - and who tragically fails. This great novel is a German classic. And so is "The Jack Bull": an instant Western classic. Father (screenplay) and son Cusack with director John Badham perfectly managed to transform this timeless struggle for justice into the prairie. The scenery is breathtaking, beautiful and harsh at once, the cast is great. Especially John Cusack delivers a fine performance (indeed, I would not have guessed he is able to stand as a Western hero, but this is his finest work until today), John Goodman and L.Q. Jones are a pleasure to watch. In the all-time ranking of great Westerns this one must be a favorite choice. Highly recommended.

Movie Review: Rented it because I needed one more!
Summary: 5 Stars

Rented it because I needed one more to get the tapes for the week, and had John Goodman in it. Watched it the first time yesterday, and tonight told my wife she needs to see it with the kids. We watched it with our 3 children and a friend of theirs, We were all glued to the set till it was over. The children, ages 9-11 all enjoyed the movie, my wife insisting that we buy it, she really had to twist my arm on that one! Cusack, Goodman, Grant, McGinley, all were great. Jones, Savage, and Gillie made very good villians also, you just had to hate them. Not your typical shoot'm up western, caught up in changing times were Jones played Ballard a Cattleman greedy for land and not wanting the territory to become a state forces Cusack as Redding to (jump to the other side of the fence) as Redding publicly signs a petition for Statehood to irratate Ballard. Ballard in turn wants a toll of $10 for Redding to cross his land taking his horses to auction, not having the money Redding leaves a pair of matched stallions for collateral. Upon returning from the auction Redding finds his stallions abused and unhealthy. Redding tells Ballard to return his stallions to the same healthy condition that he had left them in and two weeks to do it. Ballard refuses and Redding tries to get it done legally by a lawsuit, this to no avail because of the judge sides with Ballard so Redding makes his own law! The scenery is wonderful, anyone who loves big skies or mountains will like the movies just for that. The never give up attitude will inspire you. The ending will... just rent or buy it.
