Movie Reviews of The Island of Dr. Moreau (Unrated Director's Cut)

Movie Review: YUCK
Summary: 1 Stars

This was one of the worst films I have ever seen...It would be a gift to give this film even one star...This film was absolutely horrible...please DO NOT make the mistake of renting out this film or purchasing this film...It would be a total mistake...This is not one of those films that should be added to your video/DVD collection...

Movie Review: AWFUL !!
Summary: 1 Stars

This has got to be one of the worst movies I've ever seen. The writing was bad and most of the acting wasn't very good, either.I really was sorry to see Marlon Brando, who is one of the greatest actors of all time, making such a fool out of himself. As far as Val Kilmer goes,he wasn't very likable here-instead watch The Ghost and the Darkness, which came out not too long after this movie, and is many times better.I thought this movie was bad when I saw it at the theater, but I thought I'd give it another chance on cable. My opinion of it went downhill even further the second time.Of course all these coments are just my own opinion-if you like the movie good for you,but I can't stand it.

Movie Review: Laughably bad
Summary: 1 Stars

I must have been naive in my younger days, because there was I time I was anxious to watch this film. It looked intriguing, with a lot of potential to be a classic sci-fi thriller. Ha, not even a director of such talent as John Frankenheimer could save this mess. Considering the fact it stars the lifeless Val Kilmer and the overacting of Marlon Brando, acting isn't much in this film. As a matter of fact, David Thewlis and Fairuza Balk deliver far better performances.

Movie Review: Tremendous "Tour de Force" in the Comedy genre.
Summary: 5 Stars

Although "The Island of Dr. Moreau" was intended as some sort of message to people attempting to change the course of human history, I thought it degenerated into a comedy in the mold of the "Evil Dead 2". It has tragedy(Ash's girlfriend dies in the Evil Dead 2, in the same vain, Dr. Moreau is murdered by his creations, and Moreau's daughter is also killed by her father's creations), comedy(Ash's own hand gives him the finger in the Evil Dead 2, conversely, how can a person not find the little guy who dresses like Moreau hilarious, the scene where Moreau and the little guy are playing Chopin's "Polonaise" is unforgettable!), perhaps the only difference between the two is the setting and budget.

Whereas the Evil Dead 2 operated on a low budget, the producers of this movie had an infinite amount of money to work with, which accounts for the prescence of the great Marlon Brando, and the always "cool" Val Kilmer, and of course, the superb special effects. As opposed to being a "sci-fi thriller", this is a kind of a strange and unusual comedy, nonetheless, I would suggest you purchase this movie(as opposed to renting!) when you recieve the opportunity. Any lover of movies owns the Evil Dead 2, and any lover of movies should own the movie that is the Evil Dead 2's equal, "The Island of Dr. Moreau". Furthurmore, Brando gives a superb performance(doesn't he always!), and as for Val Kilmer, I'm at odds trying to think of a description of his performance, I suppose "Awesome" will suffice. In conclusion, the "Island of Dr. Moreau" is a great movie, but not in the way the Godfather or Spartacus was great, more like the way the Evil Dead 2 and the 3 Monty Python films were great.

Movie Review: A crazy mess, but worth a rental fee
Summary: 2 Stars

Ever notice how some movies have all kinds of things going on in them and it's a good thing ("this movie has it all!"), but some movies have all kinds of things going on and things are a disorganized mess? Well, I'm afraid to say "The Island of Dr. Moreau" is an example of the latter. The film starts well, moodily drawing you in, and returns to coherence in its final minutes (when the filmmakers apparently say, "Hmmmm, we better try to sum this thing up and tell the audience what the Hell the moral of this story is!"), but, oh, that hour and a half in the middle! For most of the movie, we get a mish-mash of scenes involving creatures attacking the humans, creatures attacking each other, muddled motivations, Brando and Kilmer going back and forth between acting fairly reasonably and totally insane, I can go on and on. In different creative hands, perhaps the humans and creatures could have come off as genuinely complex characters, with both admirable and less than admirable qualities. Instead it's all just confusing, as if the writer and director have no idea what we're supposed to think about Moreau and his weird genetic creations. I must say that the film is worth renting to see the make-up effects, one or two poignant scenes with the creatures (usually involving Brando torturing them in the name of maintaining order), and some really funny stuff involving that mini version of Moreau that follows Brando around everywhere (and was reportedly the inspiration for Mike Myers' "Mini-Me" character in the second "Austin Powers" film). But I don't know that one needs to own this particular movie, unless you're a die-hard SF fan and can get it on Ebay for five or six bucks.
