Movie Reviews of The InvisibleMovie Review: worth the rental and a good one to watch with your teenager Summary: 4 StarsMy wife had no interest in seeing this, feeling the premise in the trailer was dumb, "a ghost must help solve his own murder".
If this were only the case then I'd agree, but its not.
Okay, the supernatural spin does come across as a bit hokey (minus 1 star).
Yet I found myself pleasantly surprised by this flick. I watch a lot of films and comment on only the few that move me on a level more than pure entertainment. This is one of those movies.
Many of a younger generation will relate with intense spectrum of feelings the characters portray in here. But beyond teen angst, there is a deeper message. Few movies these days can actually be used to drive conversation with teenagers and I think this is one of them.
At first I thought the movie wasn't going to be much, but then the deepening of the characters and the true message started to shine through and continued to the very end.
2/3rds of the way through I had no idea what was going to happen. Closer to the end it became obvious but it no more dampened the suspense of the plot line. I sat on the edge of my chair hoping certain events would transpire and was satisfied with the ending.
Much better than the director's efforts with Blade: Trinity. The pace is kept up and each time I thought I'd start to fade in attention a new piece of the puzzle is given or a character deepened.
The cast was well selected for the role and well acted.
But understand this, the movie though good, is not in the league as Donnie Darko. Then again this movie is a lot easier to follow than Darko.
OVERALL:
My wife who had no desire to watch it would still give it a 2.5 star after seeing it and being drawn into the story. I got more out of it and thus bump it up to a 4 star. It's worth watching for sure!
Movie Review: It can't rain all the time Summary: 5 StarsI recently watched The Invisible which as I recall was a heavily promoted movie but flew through the theaters in a couple weeks. That is a shame because this is a quietly beautiful movie about sad, lonely people whose lives violently intersect and leave us wondering what might have been had their lives been different. This movie plays out as a gothic version of Romeo and Juliette with a heavy dose of CW TV thrown in. But seriously, who doesn't like CW TV? Supernatural? Smallville? Come on...
A central theme to The Invisible is the thought of how our lives might be different if we had met different people. This is a hopelessly romantic idea and how you feel about this will in large part determine how you view The Invisible. Everyone talks about soul mates - but do you know this person you are calling a soul mate is that? Isn't it likely that there are probably hundreds, maybe even thousands of people who could fit that category for you but you never meet them? We quickly diagnois and classify people that come into our lives summing them up in a span of 15 minutes, often basing our ideas on superficial sensory perceptions. We then file them away on the shelf like cereal boxes at Wal Mart. 25% Protein. 15% Sugar. 3% Iron. Imagine how many experiences and influences go into making a person. Everyone is like a Pollack canvas and most of the world will never get to see even a small portion of these paintings. It really is a cold world if you think about it like that.
The Invisible revolves around a golden boy, Nick, and a trouble girl, Annie whose lives tragically cross and ultimately how that event shapes them. What would have happened if Nick and Annie had found each other in different circumstances? The movie does a nice job letting this play out and the scene on the bed with the dart board is one of the best in the movie. Excellent song during this and overall a strong soundtrack that complements the movie.
This movie was marketed as a teen thriller/horror movie and it is neither. Some may dismiss this as a wallow in teen angst, but I do not. It is about broken people (which in fact is an intregal line in this movie), why we break and how we may never quite get fixed. Margarita Levieva plays Annie and this is the first role I've seen her in. IMDB tells me she is from St. Petersburg, Russia. Annie has one of the best reveals in recent movies and she undergoes serious character development during the events that take place. This is the sort of character Angelina Jolie would have played back in her Hacker days. But could she have pulled off the final act? I doubt it.
So many movies either cannot end or end so badly that the ending of the Invisible is startling in its poignancy. One of the best endings of they year. I won't spoil it, but it is fitting and flawless and deeply moving. The sort of ending that makes you remember the first time you read Ode to a Nightingale and felt the bittersweet symphony that is life. It is sad and sweet and contains a glimmer of hope, like the line from another moody tragic masterpiece, it can't rain all the time.
Movie Review: Not what the previews promised... Summary: 2 StarsI agree with what seems to be the general consensus here - this movie is just "eh".
We rented this after seeing a couple previews for it. There was no rating on Rotten Tomatos, and the previews gave it a "6th Sense" feel - a half-dead boy trying to unravel the mystery of his murder (or attempted murder).
But that is not at all the case. There is no mystery. The movie tells you, from the start, who tries to kill him & why. Therefore, there is really no compelling reason to keep watching. You know who does, you know why, and you know that in the end he'll wake up from his coma.
If you're into Ghost Whisperer, Touched by an Angel, and those types of shows, you might like this. It is a very teenage show, and very very low budget.
I give it 2 stars for a nice idea, but I barely was able to finish it & would not watch it again.
Movie Review: Awful in EVERY possible way! Summary: 1 StarsSave your money, Save your time - this movie is not worth a moment of anyone's time. I'm all for supernatural thrillers, mystery murder dramas, etc...but this movie is just bad - poorly acted, scenes are so over-dramatic, it's just so far-fetched. I rarely give out reviews, I rarely give one star as a rating but this movie surely deserves it.
Movie Review: It should have ended with London!! Summary: 2 StarsThe premise was great and the movie seemed to start out strong, Margarita Levieva was awfully cute as the tough girl, and the first few repartees were snappy... but 30 minutes into the movie it felt like mad editors had run amok! Suddenly, none of the characters decisions made any sense... (or mattered!!) and who wants to root for a poorly developed character!! Seriously... the movie would have gotten another star if Justin had just used the ticket to London!! (Obviously... you would have to watch the movie to understand that - but... it's not worth it)
I cannot and do not recommend!! Go watch Chumscrubber instead :)
All the best,
Jay
