Movie Reviews of The Invincible Iron ManMovie Review: Fun, Exciting, and Very Well Animated Summary: 5 Stars
I enjoyed this movie more than I expected to. I'm a big comic fan, so I figured I would like it, but honestly it exceeded my expectations.
This is an origin story for Iron Man, so of course quite a bit of the story is taken up with establishing who Tony Stark is and why he becomes Iron Man. This part of the movie was actually pretty well told and interesting, with some decent characterizations for Tony and Rhodey, and some interesting bits with Tony's father. Once Tony becomes Iron Man, the action takes off, and for the most part it is very well done.
The animations look good throughout -- some of the characters aren't as detailed as they could be, but with the lighting and shadows, they still look good, and the backgrounds are very well done. Frequently CGI is used to make things look more 3D or real, and it really looks great. Much of the action is done via CGI as well, and the Iron Man suit looks fantastic that way. The animators also did a very good job of giving the armor a sense of weight and bulk that makes it more realistic, and even the sound effects when the armor hits or crashes increase the realism. The entire soundtrack, in fact, sounds very good and high quality.
I enjoyed seeing Iron Man in the two Ultimate Avengers movies, but this was a better showcase for him in all respects. Having only him to focus on, the writer was able to develop the character better, and the use of CGI for the armor really made it look impressive and powerfull (and I'm glad they showed the armor taking damage as Tony fought.) I've enjoyed all the Marvel Animated movies so far, and think this is a quality addition. The Hulk fight in the first UA is probably the highlight of the three movies so far, but the animation in this one was the best so far, and the story was also well done (and even moving.) This one also has a slightly longer running time (about ten minutes longer, I believe,) and I think it benefits from it. I felt both the UA movies (which I liked) could have benefited from some extra time to develop the characters and villians a bit more.
On a seperate note -- the special features are very good also. One feature is the first eight or so minutes of the Doctor Strange animated movie set to come out this summer. All I can say is very, very cool. That movie is looking really good, and I'm excited to see the rest when it comes out. There's also a history of all the armor Iron Man has worn over the years, an alternate intor (which actually gives a good overview of the Mandarin and the elementals, and probably would have been a good addition to fit somewhere into the finished movie) and a documentery focusing on Iron Man's origin (which I have not watched yet, but intend to.)
Overall, I recommend this movie. I think anyone can enjoy it. Some changes were made to the Iron Man mythos to update it, but the story and the characters all stay very true in spirit to their source material, and the fight scenes(especially the ones with the elementals) were fun to watch.
