Movie Reviews of The Inspector Lynley Mysteries - Set 1Movie Review: Wonderful cinematography and great acting Summary: 4 Stars
The only reason I did not give this 5 stars is the variation in the sound, and the difficulty at times hearing the actor's lines. The video is otherwise a pleasure to watch, with many gorgeous scenes and great plots and acting. Would highly recommend!
Movie Review: Wonderful Summary: 4 Stars
I am looking forward to purchase all the Sets of Inspector Lynley. They are wonderful.
Movie Review: Inspector Lynley Summary: 3 Stars
I am an Elizabeth George fanatic, and while I enjoyed these films, they were not as good as the books. It was adjustment seeing Inspector Lynley as a blond, but the gentleman playing the part does an excellent, excellent job. Helen Clyde is a disappointment---role should be played by someone beautiful, vivacious and likable. Havers is perfect---played very well.
All in all, I would highly recommend---especially for a rainy day---and lots of popcorn.
Movie Review: Incredibly Disappointing Compared to the Books Summary: 2 Stars
I've been reading and thoroughly enjoying the Inspector Lynley mysteries. When I saw that PBS was offering the videos on Mystery! I decided to give them a try, even though I typically am disappointed by the conversion of books to movies. These movies do not even remotely due justice to the characters or stories. Elizabeth George treats us to wonderful character descriptions, and extremely well written interactions between the suspects and Inspector Lynley and Sgt. Havers, and between Thomas Lynely and Barbara Havers. The differences in their class, their financial situations and just the way they see the world is as important as who done it and why. All of this is missing from the movies. Worst of all is the pathetic summing up of who the killer is and their motive. "For the Sake of Elena" concluded with such a weak version of the motive, that if I hadn't read the book I would have thought that the screenwriter couldn't come up with a reason. In "Payment in Blood" the real reason for Inspector Lynley's assignment to the case is never revealed. In the book the reason and the consequence is very important, serves to be quite a red herring, and provides greater understanding of the main characters motivation. The actors portrayal of Inspector Lynley and Sgt. Havers are adequate, but don't capture the struggle, anger, frustration, and growing respect that exist between the two. This series could have been so much better. Ninety minutes is insufficient time to capture the depth of the books. I suggest saving your money and purchasing the books instead. Or if you've read the books, don't waste your time with these movies which are mere shadows of the story.
Movie Review: Elizabeth George fans may be seriously disappointed Summary: 2 Stars
In their apparently never-ending quest to frustrate fans of famous mystery authors, we now have the mangling of the Elizabeth George mysteries. If you are not a EG fan, or if you can shut the books out of your mind while you watch television, you may enjoy these. Friends of mine who have never read Elizabeth George liked them a lot.
I am well aware that visual media are completely different from written media and that a book may require significant adaptation and simplification. EG's characters often spend a lot of time musing, and that just can't transfer to film very well.
What is annoying is that the spirit is lost. The characters seem to bear little resemblance to their written counterparts in ways that completely throw off their personalities. It's not so bad that Lynley doesn't look at all as described, the characterization could still work. Barbara Havers, on the other hand, is struggling with being an irredeemably homely and dowdy woman, she's not a cute little pixie who goes in for a casual look. It's a major part of her personality, her whole worldview and her interactions with other people are affected by her self-image. And as for Helen, I kept thinking that I must be mishearing the name.
I can't bear to watch.
