Movie Reviews of The Inspector Lynley Mysteries - Set 1Movie Review: Excellent adaptations, except ... Summary: 4 Stars
As a fan of mysteries in all forms, I continue to be amazed by the excellence of the TV adaptations of Elizabeth George's books. Usually I like reading the book first and then watching the TV version. Most often one gets thoroughly disappointed or even disgusted by the liberties the directors took with the material. Not in the case of "Inspector Lynley Mysteries.".
It would be unrealistic to expect all the book details to be included, especially with books like George's, which sometimes stretch the patience of even those most liking thorough characterizations. I read her first book after watching the TV adaptation, and at first I was shocked by the appearance of several people essential for the story as told in the book. Quickly I realized, however, that it would have been impossible to include them and keep any semblance of coherence within the time limit of the TV format, and second, that they were not essential for the mystery part of the story. The title of the series is "Inspector Lynley Mysteries," after all. Some of the soap-opera parts of the books are better left ignored.
I would call the TV adaptations perfect, if it were not for one huge flaw: Helen Clyde. The TV person is a total antithesis of the elegant and witty Lady Helen of the books. The TV Helen is described as a brilliant profiler, but so far has not shown any brain at all. The producers would do best to send this neurotic person permanently to a psychiatric couch and get rid of her for good.
Movie Review: Less Complex than the Books Summary: 4 Stars
Not as flashy as some other British police procedurals but quite solid and interesting. Depend on my fellow American to go one better than Dorothy Sayers and make her detective an earl with a very posh background. Sargeant Havers, his working class foil, comes across as rather the more interesting character. Instead of unrequited love or the pecadilloes of wearers of the old school tie, she is wrestling with the more realistic problems of aging parents and attendant guilt.
They make a very good detecting combination.
However, I did fixate on one thing-- Lynley's upper lip. It seems long and out of proportion to the rest of his face. Also it doesn't move much. Is this what is meant by a stiff upper lip? Ah, well, at least it wasn't pumped full of collagen!
Movie Review: Love the series; Disappointed not all first episodes not included! Summary: 4 Stars
I love the series and truly enjoyed every episode, which is why I ordered the entire series. Or so I thought. I should have read the description for Series 1 closer than I did. I was under the impression that all the episodes of the Series from the beginning were included, but that was not the case.
This series CD does not include the very first episode, the one in which Havers and Lynley are first paired-in the first movie entitled A Great Deliverance. If you want that episode, you'll have to purchase it separately. I don't know why it's not included, but it should be, as it is part of the series. AFter all, this episode began the series, didn't it?
Other than that, I highly recommend the series for any fan of mysteries, especially British ones.
Movie Review: As gripping as ever Summary: 4 Stars
I never saw the earlier episodes, so these have been a nice surprise. What I love most about the on-screen adaptations of George's novels is that they keep the convoluted plot twists. It's fun to shift suspicions back and forth about the who and why of each case. It's also nice watching the detectives get to know each other better in these early days of their relationship.
Previous reviewers have helpfully noted that the Amazon.com's "Set 1" does not include the two-hour pilot episode, in which Havers and Lynley work their first complicated case together. Amazon.co.uk's "Inspector Lynley Series 1 and Pilot" does, and right not it's a cheaper price with the overseas shipping.
Movie Review: The Best Series is Inspector Lynley Summary: 4 Stars
Because I am such an avid fan of Elizabeth George, I could not wait to order this Set (1). I also purchased Sets 2 and 3.
What enjoyment! The acting is the best of the best.
A perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
Now I am waiting in great anticipation for Set 4!
Hurry.
