Movie Reviews of The Inheritance

Movie Review: Lovely period piece depicting a 'classless' class system
Summary: 5 Stars

"Stay away from a world you will never be a part of," is the advice given to young Edith Adelon (Shayne) an impoverished orphan who was taken in by a wealthy family to be their daughter's companion. When tragic James Percy (Gibson) falls for her, she's convinced by society that she has nothing to offer him.

But her benefactor Henry Hamilton (Conti) has a plan to upstage them. He's going to break tradition big time and enter Edith in the annual horse race, The Greens Cup, riding astride, no less.

This is a fascinating peek at Victorian times and a society women fought hard to overcome, both in terms of class stigma and propriety. The author of the original story, Louisa May Alcott, was one of the stronger proponents of women's rights in her time. Indeed, she had to write part of her stories under a male pseudonym in order to get published. This is a beautifully done story and well worth the price of the disk. You will want to watch this film more than once.

Movie Review: awesome movie about girl power
Summary: 5 Stars

I am so glad I taped this movie when I saw it on tv for the first time back in 1997. I have watched it atleast 10 times since and my tape is starting to get worn out. I was thrilled to find it is available for purchase. I plan on getting a copy off amazon soon. It is based on the book by Louisa May Alcott. I finally was able to get a hold of a copy of the book a few months ago and read it within a week. It's a bit different from the movie. I am not sure which I like best. I normally do not enjoy Meredith Baxter's acting, but I thought she was terrific in The Inheritance. I cannot imagine anyone else playing her part.
The reason I said this movie is about girl power, is because the main character Edith not only respects others, but also herself. She turns down a man who only wants her for sex. She knows she doesn't have to settle for just any man. Also, she competes in a horse race even though girls are not allowed. She challenges tradition and helps remind others that money isn't everything.

Movie Review: A really superb production!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I haven't read the novella from which the movie is inspired, but I simply revelled in viewing this DVD, and found myself totally riveted by it. "The Inheritance" is a refreshingly interesting, well-made, extremely watchable film, with fine acting and a storyline that does keep one enthralled right to the end. As far as I am concerned, it is the sheer simplicity and unpretentiousness of this nineteenth-century New England romance more than anything else that wins it. Most/all of the actors turn in highly commendable performances, but Cari Shayne in particular is especially commanding as well as verily believable as the kind-hearted, modest and oh-so-likeable Edith Adelon, and the last minutes of "The Inheritance" are quite a tribute to the dignified fashion in which the character carries herself all along and the numerous sacrifices she makes.

In brief, I would settle cosily and view "The Inheritance" for a second time any day, and for sure have no hesitation in recommending it to others.

Movie Review: Very Enjoyable!
Summary: 5 Stars

As one who usually enjoys period pieces, indeed, I very much enjoyed this made-for-television movie. It's a charming, well-executed story. For the most part, it's a visual treat with beautiful settings, scenery and costumes. Though some complain that it's a bit predicatable, that's really quite all right with me. It's the fact that it ends "just the way you hope it will" that gives you the pleasure of watching it. Imagine if James had ended up with Ida, or if the Hamiltons had disowned Edith! Imagine the disappointment! What would have been the fun of watching then? I'm giving this moving a rating of 5 stars though my honest opinion is that it deserves about 4.5. It's a simple family-style film, similar to "Little Women" (as well it should be). It's not some SPECTACULAR epic film or anything like that. It's just a really enjoyable film, especially for those of us who--as I mentioned earlier--enjoy period pieces. If you do, then I guarantee, this is your cup of tea!

Movie Review: Clean, Entertaining, Delightful
Summary: 5 Stars

The movie "The Inheritance" is one of the best movies I have seen. I saw it on TV first, which is what prompted me to buy the DVD. I knew it was a movie I would want to have for years to come. I also wanted my daughters to watch it.

Some movies that are of this type are cheesy and predictable. This one was different. I wasn't sure what was going to happen and was actually surprised by the way things turned out.

The costumes were beautiful, the actors wonderful, and the story believable and refreshing. It was good, clean entertainment that left me feeling uplifted.

I recommend this movie to anyone who cares about goodness and morality and watching movies with your entire family, but I also recommend it on its merit as an interesting story even for those who don't care as much about objectionable language and scenes. It's just a good movie!
