Movie Reviews of The In-LawsMovie Review: Laugh until your sides ache Summary: 5 Stars
Another reviewer has said that 5 stars are not enough for this film. I'll second that opinion.
If you have seen the remake with Michael Douglas, pretend you haven't and watch the way it SHOULD be done. If you've seen neither version of the film, get this one and get ready for anything.
This is above all a classically sarcastic farce between two misfits who have amazing chemistry together. Both Peter Falk and Alan Arkin are marvelous craftsmen, and their combination of silliness and genuine rolicking humor is blended in an almost non-stop pace from beginning to end. Again (as I've said in other of my reviews), minor characters are important. Ed Begley as the CIA boss adds weight and color to that aspect of the plot, and Richard Libertini as the South American dictator (I've never seen him play a sane character) adds another kind of raucous fun.
This is a comedy for anyone who appreciates true comedy. And if you meet anybody who has seen the film, just scream, "Surpentine! Surpentine!" and watch them fall apart.
Movie Review: "The next time we're in Tijata, Shel ..." Summary: 5 Stars
Perhaps once of the best comedic movies of all time. A classic, without a doubt. As I watched this film for the ump-teenth time recently, I am still amazed at all of the funny lines and scenes. I actually thought the script was 50% improvisation given how well Falk and Arkin interact on camera. They make it look so natural and effortless. Richard Libertini is a south-of-the-border cliche of cliches, and he is brilliant at it! What more can be said about the movie that hasn't already been said? Heaps of praise from this reviewer. As for the DVD itself, the only addition is a commentary, which was nice, given that it was Arkin, Falk, the director and the screenplay writer. Unfortunately they got off track so much in their own conversations vs. what is being shown on the screen that you've heard the whole serpentine bit 5 minutes into the film, and other things like that. But still worth the price! No remake could ever do this screwball comedy justice.
Movie Review: Far Superior to the Remake Summary: 5 Stars
The 1979 version of The In-Laws is so much better than the pathetic remake of a few years ago, its not even funny.
What made the original so great was the screenplay by Andrew Bergman who also wrote the scripts for Blazing Saddles, Fletch and The Freshman. Bergman's script was finely tuned to the personas of Alan Arkin and Peter Falk to a degree that few screeenplays nowadays are. Falk's character was written as a dishonest version of Lieutenant Columbo that added to the fun. Perhaps no other film could take such an ungainly phrase as "serpentine, Shelly, serpentine" and provoke so much laughter with it.
Add in the on-screen chemistry of Arkin and Falk and you have yourself a comedic winner.
Movie Review: One of the best comedies of all time Summary: 5 Stars
One of the best comedies ever! Anyone who even tries to give this movie 4 stars should be sent to work with Vince Ricardo for a week.In the 1970s some movie makers still took the time to build an audience's interest in the characters and the film. In this case the action moves oh so slowly at the beginning as you have absolutely no idea what is going to happen. And when the action does get going, it's one of the most originally scripted movies you will ever see. And one of the best car chase scenes you will ever see. If you haven't seen it, watch it! If you have seen it: "I don't know why they took away my drivers license Shel." "Serpentine Shel, serpentine!" "Flames! My car has flames!"
Movie Review: I thought I was the only one! Summary: 5 Stars
If you go to the middle of Central Park on a sunny day, when it's crowded, and yell, "Did we hit the small boy on seventh avenue?" someone within earshot is sure to yell back, "Nah, we had a good foot, foot and a half to spare." (That scene features David Paymer as a taxi driver even scarier than Robert De Niro's!) I've been an evangelist for this movie since I saw it as a kid in the movie theater when I was 12, and I used to make guys watch it before I would determine if I would date them seriously or not... then I realized EVERYONE loves this movie, so it doesn't rule anyone out!! Hey, if you love Alan Arkin like I do, you've got to rent Simon. He's at his understated, straight-faced comic best.
