Movie Reviews of The Image

Movie Review: Erotic and chilling
Summary: 4 Stars

Mostly out of curiousity, I bought this film and I was surprised at the extent of the graphic sex and violence, especially for 1975! All in all, a very well done film, the fitting room scene will keep you glued even if the bathroom scene or the dungeon doesn't.

Movie Review: how many times are they going to ask me to review this movie
Summary: 4 Stars

I already wrote a review, let's see if they keep asking for one. I liked it.

Movie Review: An erotic trainwreck 2.5 stars
Summary: 3 Stars

Whips and chains, anyone? For some, this movie might feel like torture. However, THE IMAGE ('73) is considered by many film scholars to be a masterpiece of underground erotica.

Based on the popular French novel, this cult favorite is very well acted and beautifully shot, includes a remarkable score, plus it delves into a dark corner of sexual perversion that is rarely explored in the realm of professional cinema. But despite it's intriguing concept, heightened sexuality, and it's artistic prowess, I found it a difficult movie to sit through.

This definitely isn't a film for everybody. It pulls you into a bizzarre love triangle between a male author, a middle-aged woman, and her submissive young girlfriend, Anne.
Anne loves to be dominated in the bedroom--mentally, physically, and sexually. It's pretty bizarre, especially considering this film seems to deal with the upper class. I tend to think of wealthy people as being more subdued or conservative. Maybe prudish. But assuming they can't get freaky was foolish thinking on my part.

This has some disturbing images of bondage, torture, and degradation. I for one wasn't offput by the sadomasochistic sex scenes that placate most of the story. In fact, I found the psychological motivations to initially be pretty captivating. But, my curiosity could only last so long.

Sex-torture-sex-torture-sex-torture-sex-torture-sex-torture. That's about all THE IMAGE ends up amounting to. I was kind of hoping they would throw in a sci-fi angle, with wicked scientists performing sexual experiments. But no, it's kept very realistic, and never really explained. It is all done very artistically, but still I found it tiresome. There are some images of towering buildings, elongated structures, and narrow towers arbitrarily inserted--I guess trying to artistically fuse the penis into my subconscious. No thanks. Not really my thing.

Movie Review: Fast forward review
Summary: 3 Stars

This wierd little thing has features of mainstream and sex loop flicks, including two NPS-X rated feed the babe scenes, and two babe as sprinkler scenes. There's also an update on Mr. Bean's how to hide food scene, and some other assorted nastiness. Unlike a loop it has a soundtrack, but it's hideous, so that doesn't really matter. And the picture quality is better than, say, an HOM or Nuwest loop, but there's some "plot" to plow through as an offset, kind of a draw there.

For sex sleaze fans, we got two or three whipping scenes, but it's all reaction shots with a few fakey after effects that don't match the apparent violence at all. In spite of all the nudity and the general sleaze atmosphere, there's really not much here.

So, I guess three stars, one for all the whipping scenes, given their relative weakness, one for the assorted nastiness, and I guess one more for having such a cute slave babe and for the percentage of nudity to total running length (NTRL) factor.

Movie Review: Very Erotic, but lacks plot, and depth of characters
Summary: 3 Stars

I was actually surprised that this film was displayed in the new release section at my local, independent video store, and not in some sectioned off area. It was totally pornographic-even though it was done more tastefully than most.
I agree that the narration was cheesy-and so was the acting. Anne's role was played by the wrong actress I think. I just didn't see any chemistry between the 2 women. Even though the acting was not that great, I don't think it was really meant to be more than BDSM. Especially during the ending when Claire and Jean are having sex and they tell each other "I love you". It is all about lust, not love. One reviewer commented that this was not real erotica, or something to that effect, and that people should watch "The Secretary" or "The night Porter" to see true erotica. That is not true at all. I've seen all of those films and while they are great-this is just a more shallower version.
