Movie Review: The best erotic film ever made
Summary: 5 Stars
As one of the two classic books that have explored the dynamics of sexual dominance and submission (the other being the The Story of O by Pauline Reage), I was fully prepared to be disappointed by the film version of the book. I originally saw this film in the theater when it was first released and remember being blown away by it. I honestly believed then (as I do now) that this may be the best erotic film ever made. Period.
I purchased it on DVD back in the late 70's and somehow lost my copy during one of my many moves around the country. I tried on numerous occasions to find another copy to no avail.When I found it available on Amazon, I immediately purchased it and wondered to myself whether it would still hold it's magic after the passage of so many years. I'm glad to say that it still wears well.
I will reiterate what most of the reviewers have said. This film is not for everyone. If you are offended or oft put by images of oral sex, urination, whippings, and public sexual display, then the film will not be your cup of tea. There is very distinct line between porn and erotic art. This film is a work of art.
Movie Review: OMG!!! IT IS THE MAY QUEEN HERSELF!!!

Mary Mendum is the daughter of my 5th grade teacher at St. Mary's grade school, in West Chicago, Illinois. Her mother, also named Mary, must have gone to her grave embarrassed and broken-hearted over her daughter's choice of profession. The daughter as I remember her was a plumpish, rosy-cheeked girl who was, of course, chosen by the nuns to be May Queen in the second grade or thereabouts to compensate (let's call a spade a spade) her mother for devoting her adult life to teaching parochial school students for minimum pay. The May Queen, for you non-Catholics, is the girl considered the most angelic child of her class year and is the girl who represents her class at the crowning of the Blessed Virgin Mary every May in her local Catholic parish.
I wish someone would do a documentary about Mary Mendum, especially if she is capable of self-reflection and insight into her life, her pathway, and her career. Her stage and film career is an amazing story, apparently begun in the Chicago road show of HAIR. Someone please do the documentary!! How in the world did she go from May Queen at the age of 8 or 9 to porn actress??!!
Movie Review: Metzger at his Finest!

Arguably the finest S/M movie ever made, Radley Metzger's 'The Image'(aka The Punishment of Anne) tells of Jean, a writer who meets an old friend, Claire, at a party and is soon drawn into her world of S/M along with her slave, Anne. Based on the French novel 'L'image' by Jean de Berg, a nom de guerre for Catherine Robbe-Grillet, this may be Radley (Score!, Therese and Isabelle, The Opening of Misty Beethoven)Metzger's best film. Beautifully filmed and acted and very erotic.
The dvd transfer of the film is absolutely stunning. The picture is pristine and the colors leap out at you. The new stereo mix is great. The original mono track is also included. There is a Metzger filmography and a few trailers for his films included as well. Kudo's to Synapse for releasing this gem of a film and doing such a great job on it!
If your up for some primo euro-erotica at its finest, look no further!
Movie Review: One of a Kind

THE IMAGE is a disturbing, erotic, scary, elegant movie that probably only Radley Metzger could have made. Most directors of 'erotica' concentrate on gynecological close-ups to the exclusion of all else; Metzger's hallmark has always been to tell a story and explain the characters and their situation without ever resorting to the patronizing smirk, relying as much on the actors' eyes as on the dialogue. The S&M scene is as alien to me as peanut-butter-and-pickle sandwiches (which I am also told some enjoy), but in THE IMAGE I can see the gamesmanship, the role-playing and the unspoken psychological leveraging that makes it all so compellingly complex. Would I show this film to Grandma? Uh-uh. But then, that's just MY grandma, yours may well have a side you never suspected. This film is hot, fascinating, and, in this gorgeous and UNCUT (thank you, thank you!) video transfer, stunningly beautiful as well.Movie Review: one of the best erotic movies ever

Obviously "the Image" directed by Radley Metzger is one of the best erotic masterpieces ever, it does more to titillate and stimulate than anything else, therefore the sexual tension. There are graphic sex scenes also, but those are not the most memorable parts. The S&M scenes are quite shocking, unless you are an expert of European S&M movies, so that includes most of us I am afraid. It is also called the "the Punishment of Anne", it is based on the book by author Jean de Berg. To me it is even better than "the Story of O", because almost every scene in "the Image" leaves you wanting more, of course we can not always have what we want. The girl Anne is a very desirable creature indeed, aside from being a good actress. This movie is not to be missed, unless you have a problem with S&M scenes, submission, whipping, urination etc.. Highly recommended to any adults searching for great erotic movies.
