Movie Reviews of The Illustrated ManMovie Review: Fans of Bradbury, Steiger (or Serling) shouldn't miss this one Summary: 5 Stars
First let me say that I love Bradbury, including his screenplays, novels, and short stories. That being said, some purists will criticize the film for not being faithful enough to the book.
Fortunately, I first saw the film many years ago before reading the book and was completely captured by it. It's at least as good as I remembered and not unlike a series of linked Twilight Zone episodes. The tatoo images on Steiger's body unfold into disturbing stories in this mesmerizing film. If you allow for the willing suspension of disbelief to take hold then you are in for one great ride.
Most importantly, Steiger's performance is terrific and not to be missed. Certainly one of his greatest achievements.
[For British horror genre fans there are some similarities to a very hard to find but worthwhile B movie classic from Amicus Productions called, unimaginatively, Dr. Terror's House of Horrors featuring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee.]
Movie Review: Paul Scott Summary: 5 Stars
For all those people who are fans of classic sci/fi movies, already know of this movie and are like me and have'nt seen this movie since they were are kid, rest assure you will not be dissappointed. The 2 channel sound reproduction is excellent but I was more impressed with the picture quality which is superb. Skin tones and facial detail come alive and outdoor scenes are soft and clear in this amazing DVD transfer. If you have'nt seen this movie for a while in my opinion the story's still hold up very well thanks to the charismatic acting from the cast. The whole film apitomises late 60's sci/fi complete with art deco sets and heavily relying on atmosphere instead of special effects to convey a message. The story set on Venus in particular is excellent with a real sense of forboding. Wish they would do a remake.
Movie Review: "Don't you ever call them 'tatoos' boy!" Summary: 5 Stars
Rod Steiger's enigmatic, menacing Carnival worker is the central character in this adaptation of Ray Bradbury's classic novel. Succumbing to the charms of Time Travelling Sorceress Falicia, (Clare Bloom), on his day off, the man ends up being tatooed all over from the neck down. Staring into the "Skin Illustrations" (as he repeatedly insists they must be called)on his body triggers off all too real fantasies for the unwitting viewer - all of which culminate in disaster. This is a cult classic of a film, rather overlooked at the time of release (1969) and it is better absorbed if treated as an Occult - rather than a sci-fi film.
Movie Review: Rod Stieger--The Best. Summary: 5 Stars
Rod Steiger's temper in Heat of the Night was great. It's even better here. He's an angry man and rightfully so. A classic case of letting the little head think for the big head. A mysterious lady seduces him and covers him with body art. Yes. even there (so he says). He calls them "skin illustrations". And "please, don't ever call them tattoos". And whatever you do, don't ever stare into them because they will come alive.
Good subtitles.
Extra feature: Tattooed Steirger and Theatrical trailer
Movie Review: Good and creepy Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this for nostalgia purposes. My brothers and I stayed up and watched this creepy program several times in a row all night/morning long back in the early 70's (because there was nothing else on, and the station played it over and over again...). Personally, I see a parallel between this show and how life was around the late 60's/early 70's - , dad looking for work and us boys wondering where we're gonna live next.
