Movie Reviews of The HurricaneMovie Review: Great Movie To Bad It Is Based On Lies Summary: 5 Stars
I just watched this movie for the first time last nite, I dont know how I never heard of it, or the story of Hurricane Carter but I had not.I really liked this Movie (until I did my homework). The Movie was very powerfull leaving you in disbelief, how could this happen? How could a innocent man be sentenced to Life for a crime he didnt commit? The Movie's 2nd half left me teary eyed of the injustice done to Hurricane Carter and very touched by the young man that wrote, visited & belived in his innocence and who along with his Canadian Family worked so hard to free him. Denzel Washington Does an exceptional peformance, what a great actor, But SHAME ON YOU Mr. Washington, This Movie is Based More on Lies than on the Truth, you were one of my favorite Actors, but your credibility has suffered, you had to of known of the Untruths of this Movie, and then to embrace Hurricane Carter and make a statement that this man is full of Love? I gave this Movie 5 Stars because it was entertaining. The Movie left me with wanting more, immeadiately after watching the movie I did a search on Boxer Hurricane Carter. The First site was: http://www.graphicwitness.com My first impression was, Wow this must be some Racial Web Site against Hurricane Carter, but after spending hours reading all the many pages of well documented articles and interviews, my conclussion is their is more evidence that this man, Hurricane Carter is a Guilty as charged, than an innocent man wrongly accused as partrayed in the Movie.
Movie Review: If I could give it 10 stars, I would Summary: 5 Stars
A brilliant, unforgettable, gripping account of boxer Rubin Carter's innocent inprisonment in the 1960s. I saw this movie in January, and since then I've seen it four extra times. Washington, my favorite actor of all time, delivers a performance so remarkably touching and effective, I cannot believe he lost the Oscar. This man's performance grabbed every emotion I've had. It made me bawl my eyes out but feel hopeful. I can say, without effort, this was the best performance I have ever seen in my life. And Viscellous Reon Shannon, playing Lesra, the young man who is inspired by Mr. Carter's book, "The Sixteenth Round", and fights his way to get him out of prison. Rubin Carter, as you probably know, was jailed with Mr. John Artis in the sixties, after being wrongfully convicted of murder. Twenty agonizing years later, Rubin Carter was freed from a New Jersey prison. This movie is inspiring and splendidly written. Norman Jewison created, along with an outstanding cast, what I would call the best movie I have seen in about 2 years. While not every fact was exact, I would go with the argument, "if you want to see the full story, read the book". This was a movie, therefore, not every fact could be portrayed. I still loved it, and I cant wait till it comes out on video. Bob Dylan's beautiful song "The Hurricane" was made in a fight for Rubin Carter's freedom in 1973. I hope you love this movie as much as I did. I will always remember it.
Movie Review: Amazing Summary: 5 Stars
I saw the Hurricane once my I was finally able to convince my mom to let me. I saw it with my friend and I'm so glad I got my mom to back down. This movie is not only about a twenty year struggle for freedom and justice, it's about the man of the title: Rubin "Hurricane" Carter. Rubin shows distinct changes from a studdering juvenile kid to a tough fighter and finally to a courageous role model. I always look forward when watching this over again and again, the scene where Hurricane dukes it out with hate. This movie tells the story of an amazing man and what he went through that might have even made him what he later became. He's not a brainless boxer, he understands the power of writing. And he puts forth the analogy of fate and destiny in his infamous talk with Lesra. Not only does he deliver his well known quote, he gives this thought provoking sequence of dialogue:"What was the first book you bought (read?) son?" "Yours." "You think that was an accident?" "No." "Neither do I." I love this movie and the acting done by Denzel Washington here is unforgettable. This film puts an extremely talented actor at his best in an inspiring story of faith, hope and a transition from hate to love. This movie still brings be on the brink of tears, ever since I saw it in around May at 13 years of age.
Movie Review: "The Hurricane" excels Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great DVD. It's about love, hope, faith and the things in life that some people call coincidence that are really the things God uses to keep us from seeing the way he uses the suffering of one to eventually reach many. I guess the big man just doesn't want us to see his miracles too easily. Once you see how many lives end up being touched by a book written by a condemned man, you will understand what I mean. Keep in mind that the book would never have happened were it not for the man's misfortune of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. As for the acting, the scene in solitary lockup when Hurricane fights with the personification of good and evil and hope and hopelessness in himself is one of the most gripping I have seen in any movie. Very powerful, as is the overall story. There are many other such scenes in this movie. It's too bad that so many reviewers here do not understand how a documentary styled movie moves along. It requires that you have a bit of an attention-span and willingness to be patient and flow with the story, even if you know the outcome. If you want an action-adventure movie then you should leave this one on the shelf. If you like movies that are truly collectible, and, infinitely watchable, get this one.
Movie Review: Another Brilliant Performance by Denzel Washington! Summary: 5 Stars
As seems to be the case these days with me, I was unexpectedly captivated by this story. The character development at the beginning was a little jumpy, but once I figured out who was who, I was hooked! If you sit down to watch this "film" (and it truly is a "film" and not just a "movie"!) looking forward to 2 hours of boxing, you will be sorely disappointed. My husband and I were hesitant because it is the story of a prize fighter and boxing is not at the top of our favorite subject list. However, once again, Denzel Washington does not let us down. His performance is brilliant - for that matter, all of the casting was brilliant. While the rest of the cast may have "supporting" roles, they are, each in their own right, "leading" characters in this film, for without them and the strength of their acting, this story would lose its captivating qualities. I cannot say enough good things about "The Hurricane" - all I can tell you is to enjoy it. And don't forget to watch all of the special features which are part of the DVD - you won't be disappointed, and, believe me, by the time you are done, you will have gotten much more than your money's worth!
