Movie Reviews of The Hunger

Movie Review: Slash... Glub... Slurp...
Summary: 5 Stars

THE HUNGER is one of the best vampire movies around. The mysterious, bloodsucking Blaylocks (Catherine Deneuve as Miriam and David Bowie as John) live a non-life of luxury and debauched serial-murder / feeding. Doctor Sarah Roberts (Susan Sarandon) gets mixed up w/ the deadly duo when John begins aging at an incredibly accelerated rate. Dr. Roberts might be able to help him since she happens to be doing research into slowing the aging process. Miriam falls for Sarah and makes plans to replace the now-decrepit John. The seduction / consumation scenes between Miriam and Sarah are as elegant as they are HOT! I've always loved Ms. Sarandon's eyes, and she displays quite a bit more here! Bowie is excellent in his ill-fated role. THE HUNGER stands as a vampire masterpiece...

Movie Review: i love it but i can see why others would hate it
Summary: 5 Stars

this movie's really good, it's arty, scary, gothic, and to top it off bauhaus is in the begining. it's a really depressing movie but that doesn't take away from anything it just makes you love the movie that much more, but it's alittle hard to follow sometimes and the vampires don't really do anything cool (they feed by cutting you with there cute little necklesses and then sucking on the wound) but it still works. there's mad chicks making out too. i could see why some people would hate it though, it's slow sometimes, the artiness can be alittle much sometimes, and it's really really depressing. but if you're into that sort of thing this movie is perfect for you (i loved it i stole it from hollywood video and am still collecting late fees).

Movie Review: Deneuve, Bowie, Sarandon, Bauhaus...sigh
Summary: 5 Stars

A product of it's time, this is a super stylish meditation on aging, love, terminal illness and perfect hair. Bowie is gorgeous. Deneuve is ageless, stunning. Sarandon is nubile and sensual. Tony Scott's direction is ham handed at times, heavy on the early MTV style imagery: doves, sheer curtains, levelor blinds, et. al. If you can get past the fear that Bonnie Tyler may emerge from the shadows at any time to belt out 'Total Eclipse of the Heart', this is an effectively scary concoction, drawing parallels between the surprising aging of a vampire's lovers and the (at the time) burgeoning AIDS epidemic. All this and an opening with Bauhaus in a 'batcave' style bar! Look for Ann Magnuson and Willem Defoe in minor roles.

Movie Review: ** About damn time! **
Summary: 5 Stars

From the opening moments of Bauhaus's "bela legosi's dead" until the 1st scenes of real dialogue this movie is bar none THE best vampire movie ever made to date. Say what you will but this is it. It has class, style and really takes itself serious without the cheese factor if you consider the time this movie was made. This was and still is the real deal. It is beautiful and haunting at the same time. Bowie shines in the role of the depressed aging vampire. Everything about this movie screams art (including of course the awesome soundtrack). If you are a vampire fan you know about "The Hunger", if you are just starting to explore the genre this is the must have for your collection. The crème de la crème.

Movie Review: A Stylish 80s Classic
Summary: 5 Stars

This 1983 film holds up incredibly well and has actually improved with time. Although the word "vampire" is never uttered, this is one of the best vampire films around. Tony's Scott's direction, coupled with the inspired casting of Denueve, Bowie and Saradon, makes it such a stylish trip that it's one of those rare films that's difficult to look away from.

The DVD makes a very welcome and overdue debut as this film must be viewed in widescreen to truly appeciate the visuals. The quailty is excellent. The extras include a low-key but fascinating audio commentary by the director and Susan Sarandon, a still gallery and a trailer. Very well done.
