Movie Reviews of The Hot Rock

Movie Review: "I'm telling Mom on you, Dad"
Summary: 4 Stars

There isn't much I can say about this film that hasn't been said already by other reviewers. I just wanted to put in my two cents and agree "The Hot Rock" is big fun. It's a lot like the "Oceans Eleven" remake, only with clumsier thieves. Robert Redford, Ron Leibman, George Segal and Paul Sand provide plenty of witty repartee, and the bungled robberies are hilarious. Whenever the film starts to bog down, "Bullit" director Peter Yates and "All the President's Men" screenwriter William Goldman throw another wrench into the works, keeping the pace brisk, for example, introducing "The Producers" Zero Mostel as Sand's slightly unscrupulous lawyer father, or having Ron Leibman fly pell-mell in a helicopter through New York City. (Keep an eye out as they fly by the not yet completed World Trade Center.) If you're looking for a heist film less grim than the recent "Blood Diamond," you probably won't be disappointed if you pick up "The Hot Rock."

Brr.

Movie Review: this came first
Summary: 4 Stars

I watched this movie with my dad, and within about fifteen seconds, I said, "wow, this feels just like Ocean's Eleven." and he said, "really? I was going to say Out of Sight," not realizing that both were directed by the same guy. So if you want to see what was almost certainly one of SS's inspirations, check this out. It's a riot. It would be hard to go wrong with William Goldman writing and Robert Redford starring, but then you add in Zero Mostel and it's just out-of-control funny. An excellent heist flick.

Movie Review: ...and then what???
Summary: 4 Stars

THE HOT ROCK is an old and very funny movie about all the things that go wrong after a robbery. A good way to view is to watch THE ITALIAN JOB first, then THE HOT ROCK. Robert Redford shows wonderful comedic timing and good facial expressions.

Movie Review: Vintage Westlake
Summary: 4 Stars

Afghanistan Bananastand! A classic Donald E. Westlake caper farce, with a great ensemble cast. There might have been some better casting choices for gang members, but Zero Mostel as bent attorney Prosker? Perfect.

Enjoy!

Movie Review: The only good Dortmunder movie
Summary: 4 Stars

Of the several film versions of Donald E. Westlake's "Dortmunder" novels, this is easily the best. Not perfect, but it has very good acting and the story stays fairly close to the original book.
