Movie Reviews of The Horse SoldiersMovie Review: Entertaining Civil War Story - Raid led by the Duke Summary: 4 Stars
Based mostly on historical events, the Horse Soldiers tells the story about a Union Cavalry raid deep into Rebel country. The plot is pretty good with John Wayne leading the action. William Holden plays the doctor who opposes the Duke on more than one occasion. Their interaction is solid, and adds a nice edge to the movie.
A few of the plot twists are a bit odd, to include the love interest, but the action scenes more than make up for this diversions. The final battle scene is especially well done. My kids loved it.
If you like John Wayne movies, the Horse Soldiers is a solid choice. It will keep you entertained throughout.
Movie Review: Great old-fashioned actioner Summary: 4 Stars
John Wayne on horseback. The Civil War. A daring raid. William Holden as a whiskey-swilling surgeon. What else do you need?
This story, based very loosely on a historical incident, follows The Duke as he leads his cavalry unit on a long raid through Confederate territory, causing as much mayhem as possible. And with John Wayne in the saddle, that's a lot.
I first saw this movie in the theater, when I was a kid. I loved its action and grand sweep. Many (too many) years later, watching it again on DVD I still enjoyed its action and sweep.
Some things you just never outgrow.
Movie Review: Good Wayne and Holden film Summary: 4 Stars
Decent Civil War film of supposedly true event. Wayne and Holden's characters well drawn. Wayne the troop leader and Holden, his regimental surgeon, clash over appropriate treatment of the soldiers under Wayne's command. Story drags a bit from time to time, but generally enjoyable. Romance is a bit far fetched. But hey, this's a Wayne western, so not a lot of time spent on that. Story is that Wayne made this film in part to finance his project that was in preliminary production, The Alamo.
Good transfer to DVD and horses going across wooden bridge will give your surround speakers a work out.
Movie Review: Not Anamorphic Summary: 4 Stars
Great movie, but the film really needs a proper restoration and an anamorphic release. Contrary to anything you may read, this film has never been released on DVD enhanced for 16:9 TVs. I'm watching it right now zoomed in in 4:3 Letterbox on a 42" Pioneer Elite plasma display, and it looks pretty awful.
Movie Review: The Horse Soldiers Summary: 4 Stars
This is a Hollywood version of real events that took place during the Vicksburg Campaign in 1863. While there is a lot of Hollywood flair, the events of the raid and the impact on the fall of Vicksburg are well documented. All in all it is quite enjoyable and great for a rainy afternoon.
