Movie Reviews of The Holiday

Movie Review: Happy Holidays
Summary: 5 Stars

Even though the story is lifted from an earlier film, A Couch In New York, this version takes the raw material and makes it magic. Nancy Meyers had her hands full in working this miracle. The story was sound the locations delightfilled, (Who hasn't longed to be in London for Christmas?) but the cast, oh my! Ms Meyer took three of the most over-the-top actors in film and made them act. Jude Law is charming, the reptilian Cameron Diaz is sweet and Jack Black, Mr. Out Of Control, was warm, witty and funny. Perhaps working with Kate Winslet, one of the most gifted actors of this generation made the others work up to her level. No matter, work they do. Even Scrooge would have set out a brandy, lit a pipe and settled back for this terribly short 138 minute film. In the hands of a less skilled director this could have turned to mush and saccharine but Ms Meyers keeps everyone well within recommended blood sugar limits.

So it isn't Christmas, buy this, turn up the air conditioner, set out the wasail put on your fuzzy slippers and settle back, fire in the room optional.

Movie Review: What a cute Chick Flick!
Summary: 5 Stars

Movie trailer editor, Amanda of Los Angeles, CA and journalist Iris of Surrey, England live five thousand miles apart and have never met, but are dealing with the same problem: men. Amanda having just broken up with her cheating boyfriend, Ethan and Iris having pined for her ex, Jasper, becoming engaged to the woman he left her for decide to take a vacation during Christmas. They come upon a website called home exchange and swap houses for two weeks both with a goal to forget their troubled love lives. But love ends up finding them anyways. Amanda starts a romance with Iris' older brother, Graham, a book editor and Iris starts a romance with a movie composer named Miles. With new found romance, both their lives change forever.

Let me say, this was a tear jerker for me! But they were tears for happiness, which is the best kind. I had my doubts as the movie started, but they were quickly dispersed. It's a sweet movie, definately girly and perfect for watching with girlfriends. Jude Law and Jack Black are awesome! Also good acting by Diaz and Winslet.

Movie Review: "Don't Blow Away..."
Summary: 5 Stars

A very pleasant surprise, The Holiday, is a romantic comedy that brings to the screen the parallel stories of two young women who travel to each other's countries to get over their troubles with the men in their lives only to find true love.
The Holiday is a film about human relations, hope and second chances, but most importantly about trust, love, and inner strength.
Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Jack Black and the rest of the cast, have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least! All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)! Very well written and very well presented, the movie is without a doubt guaranteed to provide more than just a few laughs, not to mention a few tears.
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, the humor, and the MUSIC (!!!) are all wonderful!
In short, The Holiday is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection! 4 1/2 Stars

Movie Review: All the makings of a classic
Summary: 5 Stars

Nancy Myers is quickly proving that she is the end all when it comes to witty, smart, dramedy! And Hans Zimmer's perfect score make this film untoppable!
The concept of the film is switching houses, think the book Tara Road.
Kate Winslet is the victim of unrequited love, and is fleeing on vacation to escape Jasper. Amanda played by Diaz, a work-aholic, incapabale of crying, flees L.A. to England to stay in a cottage owned by Winslets character. There she meets Jude Law's character and is swept away unexpectedly, only to find he's not as he seems. Winslet's character meets interesting people and helps them overcome some struggles only to also unexpectedly find love, and justice for herself, and freedom from Jasper. But not without taking two steps back first.
The music is some of the best ever in a film of this kind! Zimmer's music makes you feel the emotions. It's smart, funny, witty, will make you laugh and even cry. It has the feel of an old Hollywood love-story, feel good happy ending. It's instantly a classic!

Movie Review: I loved it!
Summary: 5 Stars

For what it is this is an absolutely fabulous movie! It's intent is to be a light-hearted, funny, and engaging romantic comedy. Not a deep, brooding movie.

Kate Winslet, as always, plays her role with charm and vivacity, and identifies well with the "every day" woman. Almost equally well in this movie is the somewhat high strung and quirky movie trailer editor, played by Cameron Diaz. Jack Black plays a serious romantic interest...which I can never recall him played before, and sometimes you just burst out laughing because you know so bad he wants to make a funny face and bring some stupid comedy into the film. :) Jude Law is absolutely gorgeous as another love interest, and he does well in making the viewer fall totally in love with him.

But I don't think this movie is just for women, either. I went and saw it with my boyfriend and we were both laughing out loud for most of the movie. Just a very charming, delightful romantic comedy, that leaves you feeling happy and satisfied at the end! :)
