Movie Reviews of The Hobbit

Movie Review: The Greatest Animated Moive is What Lies Ahead...
Summary: 5 Stars

MOVIE:
That about sums it up. This is a beautiful and stunning adaptation of the book. Who would guess the geniuses behind "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" made this? The only complaint that I have is that they showed the dwarves arrive at Bilbo's place all at once. Didn't they arrive one by one?

SONGS:
The songs are all wonderful, and almost all of them come from the book (with the esception of "The Greatest Adventure"). My personal favorite is the goblins' song ("Down, down to Goblin Town...")

CHARACTERS:
The characters are absolutely beautiful. They are exactly what I pictured them to be when I read the book. They fit Tolkien's descriptions perfectly (with the possible execptions of Dori, Nori, and Ori's hood colors being different, changing Oin and Gloin to Oincer and Doincer and their hood colors, changing Bifur and Bofur to Biffer and Boffer, and making Dwalin have a white beard instead of a blue one).

VOICES:
The voice talents are superb. Personally, I think John Huston is a better Gandalf than Ian McKellen and Orson Bean is better at Bilbo than Ian Holm is (no offense to them; they're great, too). Gollum is absolutely creepy. Richard Boone is a perfect Smaug.

OVERALL SUMMARY:
Great movie. Show it to the kids and introduce them to the world of Tolkien. After your kids have seen this one, show them the animated "The Return of the King" and, when they're older, really stun them with Peter Jackson's Trilogy.

Movie Review: The Hobbit
Summary: 5 Stars

"The Hobbit" is a great, classic, animated movie for you and the entire family! It is filled with adventure, fantasy, and fun. There, are, a lot of fantasy characters brought to life from the author J.R.R. Tolkiens book "The Hobbit or There And Back Again" which I have read. And those fantasy characters are: trolls; goblins; a terrible creature named Gollum; huge spiders; a dragon; a hobbit; a wizard; and dwarves. Some reviewers on this site are complaining about sound problems with the DVD version of "The Hobbit" and I totally believe them because I own "The Hobbit" animated movie on both VHS and DVD. Well guess what? I happen to own the 1996 VHS version of "The Hobbit", and I have noticed that even the new 2001 VHS version also has sound problems too because I have watched the new 2001 VHS version with one of my best friends, who owns it, at his house. Oh well, I guess that is just the way things are in the world. But the sound problems with the DVD and new 2001 versions of "The Hobbit" animated movie are not all that bad. All it is; is that some sound effects from the older versions of "The Hobbit" have been cut out. It doesn't bother me much. All in all "The Hobbit" animated movie is a great classic for the entire family. I highly recommend you buy this movie for VHS or DVD if you are a "Lord of the Rings" book or movie fan because "The Hobbit", as you probably know is a prequel to "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

Movie Review: the best fantasy film--so far
Summary: 5 Stars

I caught this when it was first run on television, in 1978 or 79. I was thirteen or fourteen, and literally by chance I switched on the tube just as this film--of which I had never heard--was beginning. I was enthralled, and when I discovered that the film was based on a book, well, you can guess the rest. Read, read, read.

But as to this film. I still maintain it is the finest fantasy film ever made. The storyline, of course, is excellent even considering the elements in the book that are missing from the film. The animation is, well, about what you'd expect--better than modern cartoons, but nowhere near the level of a Disney (or, these days, Dreamworks) film.

And the voices--with the exception of the elven king (as another reviewer noted--what's up with the elves here?)--are superb. For my money, John Huston's Gandalf cannot be topped. Huston's delivery has just the right amount of artificiality--rather like Shakespearean dialog--to seem both real yet somehow elevated.

I can't comment on the DVD's technical screw-ups, as I have only the VHS, which I got years and years ago. From the sounds of things, I think I'll stick with it.

Movie Review: "This most excellent Hobbit."
Summary: 5 Stars

The other day I heard someone express sadness over the fact that there has never been a solid version of The Hobbit to place alongside Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings. I corrected them by mentioning this cartoon production. As a boy, I fell in love with it and bought the DVD on Amazon last year. I still enjoy it to this day.

I admit that the artistry is mundane but, frankly, I find its campiness endearing. As far as the vocal talent is concerned, there is no greater voice than John Huston's (God rest his soul). His Gandalf is so authoritative and perfect that I'm sure Ian McKellen felt slightly intimidated before taking up the role in 1999. Yet, the best thing about the film is its music. The songs are enchanting. To quote Gandalf and Bilbo, "There's a magic in that music...and it moves through me." This is one of the most underrated movies in history. I highly, and sentimentallly, recommend it.
