Movie Reviews of The Hitcher

Movie Review: Absolutely Scary!
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie will make you never pick up a hitchhiker again. In this feature Thomas Howell plays the role of a young man who is delivering a car from Chicago to San Diego. His traveling companion and new girlfriend is played
by Jennifer Jason Leigh. The two are traveling in a huge rainstorm when they see a hitchhiker. They make the decision to pick him up. Much to their horror they discover that he is a psychopath who kills people who pick
him up. After nearly getting killed the driver finally gets the hitchhiker out of his car. The hitchhiker then begins stalking the twoaome across their route. He also leaves a trail of victims across the country. Rutger Hauer is frightening. The hitchhiker even escapes from police custody killing all of the officers. There is a violent ending that will keep you on the edge of your seat. This is one of the scariest movies I have ever seen. Watch it but with the lights on.

Movie Review: Best psychological horror ever
Summary: 5 Stars

If you loved Hitchcock's Psycho then this is a must see for you. Many movies of this caliber tend to be too theatrical and become scenes of blood and gore. This movie has more than one 'shower scene.' While many people are murdered in this movie and you know it wasn't pleasant, you don't get to see the blood and gore.
You are never quite sure what took place, it is in your mind and perhaps that is what makes this so scary.
I know there has been a remake of this movie but it doesn't even come close to this one - from what I heard and read. I didn't see the new movie myself. If you want a real challenge, try to watch this movie alone, on a dark rainy night and see what happens. If you don't think you can cut it then get some friends together who enjoy psychological thrillers and prepare to be thrilled in ways you never expected.

Movie Review: "I want you to stop me"
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of my absolute favorite horror movies. Rutger Hauer is the title character, and he deserves a spot in the movie villainy hall of fame. A lone driver on a deserted stretch of highway picks up a hitch hiker and a one way ticket to hell.

Here's what is so scary about this movie-John Ryder's persistence. Unrelenting horror really only applies to a handful of films and this movie is one of them. From implied nastiness ("...because I cut off his legs, and his arms, and his head") to scenes of nerve shattering violence this is a movie you shouldn't watch before a road trip.

Now here's the rub. This dvd edition sucks donkeys. Blue Underground or Anchor Bay need to step in and rectify the situation. This is a classic that deserves classic treatment. If you liked Steven Spielberg's Duel you'll love this movie.

Movie Review: "My mother told me never to do this"
Summary: 5 Stars

No other film has incurred the ire of prolific critic Roger Ebert more than 1986's The Hitcher. "...diseased and corrupt...showing a deep sickness at the screenplay stage...a reprehensible film." Ouch. Since its release in 1986, to little fan fare and nearly universal critical distaste, The Hitcher has since garnered the admiration of genre fans the world over. It is a tricky thriller, fast-paced, action-packed, brutal, stylish, beautifully photographed and scored. The film raises questions it in no way begins to answer. The relationship between the protagonist and villain being a dandy of an enigma. There is no sub plot and little back story. In the end, The Hitcher leaves a feeling of distance in the viewer, a palpable numbness, which to some will invariably revolt, even sicken, for others will chill to the bone.

Movie Review: Very Well made horror thriller
Summary: 5 Stars

This film is not really about much at all. You will not emerge from the cinema a better or more intelligent person. It is however an effective well crafted horror thriller.

A young man is driving a car across America. He picks up a hitcher who is clearly a psycopathic killer and is perhaps something more. He is able to escape but as he travells across America he is followed by the killer.

The role of the killer is played by Rutger Hauer. He is brilliant in the role and is able to convery a sense of both menance and evil.

The film is not one that has many scenes which are gross outs or filled with horror yet the film has an absolute tension which goes from scene to scene. It is a consumately brilliant film from a technical point of view.
