Movie Reviews of The HitcherMovie Review: Story has more than meets the eye... Summary: 5 Stars
A few quick remarks: this is not a horror movie, this is not a remake or tribute to Spielberg's "Duel" and this movie works precisely because it does not fall neatly into such categories.
The movie's screenplay was said by it's author to have been inspired by the Doors/Jim Morrison's song, "Riders on the Storm". One recurring element throughout Morrison's poetry is images of the desert. Another recurring element in Morrison's poetry is the significance of myth in human life.
So considering the above, the success of the movie is due to the "mythical" qualities of the screenplay's story and characters combined with superior acting, an excellent and complimentary soundtrack by Mark Isham and vivid and well crafted on location photography.
As for the meaning and philosophical/mythical metaphors of the film, you'll have to e-mail me. An above average, interesting and unsettling film, if you don't see the quality here, I'd say you just don't get it.
Movie Review: See this version, not the remake Summary: 5 Stars
Why Hollywood remakes movies such as "The Hitcher," "Psycho" or "The Manchurian Candidate" defies explanation. All of these should be seen in their original versions, not as remakes.
Every review I've read of the 2007 version of "The Hitcher" has been horrible, and I don't plan on wasting my money on it.
See this 1986 version. The combination of C. Thomas Howell, Rutger Hauer and Jennifer Jason Leigh; plus the landscape, music and lighting; plus Robert Harmon's direction made for a must-see thriller/horror classic. It is a work of art. If you like reading pulp/noir/crime fiction, you'll love watching this cult classic which succeeds as much because of perfect casting and perfect choices of locations as anything else.
But remaking this is like repainting classic art or rewriting Shakespeare -- I mean, it's just downright stupid and also doomed from the get-go.
[Five stars for the movie; I'm not rating the quality of this DVD (see reviews below).]

Movie Review: One of the greatest horror movies to come out of the 80's Summary: 5 Stars
Some call the original Hitcher a horror movie, others classify it under the suspense genre, etc. All that aside, this little flick did more than turn a few heads back when it came out in the mid-80's, featuring Rutger Hauer's ice cold performance as a psychotic killer who hitches a ride with a young man (C. Thomas Howell) whom he terrorizes and frames for his crimes as the film rolls on. Considering the time the Hitcher was made, it's surprisingly not predictable, and loaded with taut suspense, with great performances from Howell, Jennifer Jason Leigh (whose character has the most infamous death in the whole film), and especially Hauer who is disturbingly perfect as psychopathic killer John Ryder. Hopefully the Hitcher will be re-released on DVD with loads of features and a much better picture transfer (the one on this disc is terribly grainy), and considering all the DVD double dipping of late, that possibility isn't entirely unlikely.
Movie Review: Jennifer Jason Leigh Taffy-Pull... Summary: 5 Stars
Jim Halsey (C. Thomas Howell) is a normal guy, just trying to stay awake behind the wheel of his car (well, it's not really his, but he's delivering it from Chicago to San Diego). After a near-death experience w/ an oncoming semi, he decides to pick up a hitch-hiker named John Ryder (the incredible Rutger Hauer). Ryder soon reveals himself to be a psychopathic serial-killer, intent on adding Jim to his long list of victims. Jim manages to escape Ryder's clutches, only to trigger an insane game of cat and mouse, psycho-style! Halsey must try and survive Ryder's vengeance, while eluding the police. With the help of a girl named Nash (SWF's Jennifer Jason Leigh), Halsey stumbles into one horror after another! The movie's multiple climaxes had me chewing my nails 'til my fingers bled! Hauer's John Ryder is pure evil, even scarier than his sociopathic replicant character in BLADERUNNER! A classic villain! Highly recommended...
