Movie Review: The Hitcher
Summary: 5 Stars

After narrowly escaping the knife of a deranged hitchhiker, Jim must compete in a deadly game of cat and mouse in order to stop the maniac from killing more people on a lonesome stretch of highway. THE HITCHER is a perfectly crafted suspense film built on superior characters and mood as well as a kinetic score. Rutger Hauer is as charismatic as he is deathly terrifying as John Ryder. He is instills more fear and intensity in a single smile than in a scowl. The desolate desert backdrop makes for a hopeless setting where a homicidal madman could conceivably go on a murderous rampage and avoid capture. The carefully crafted plot and structure make for a brilliant cat and mouse chase that is fueled by revenge and sport. Just when the film feels like it is at its safest, when nothing could possibly go wrong, Ryder glides in like a shark and catches both the characters and the audience completely by surprise. Eric Red's keen scripting paired with Hauer's impeccable performance both serve to create one of the genre's most notorious and memorable human villains. THE HITCHER is a high-octane ride from start to finish, and is a must-see for all Horror fans!

I Like Horror Movies

Movie Review: one of my favorite movies
Summary: 5 Stars

I just saw this movie last week on AMC and I was surprised at how good it was! Normally I don't watch many movies from the 80's, because they're kind of dated (I mostly grew up in the 90s), but this one could have taken place in any year. It's about a kid (C. Thomas Howell) who is driving from Chicago to San Diego. Somewhere in the middle of nowhere, he picks up a hitch-hiker (Rutger Hauer) to keep himself from falling asleep at the wheel. Almost as soon as the hitcher gets into the car, you know that something is not right. You later find out that he cuts off the limbs of the people that pick him up. The kid is able to throw him out of the car and thinks he is free of that psycho when a station wagon with the hitcher inside passes his car on the interstate. Throughout the rest of the movie, the hitcher plays mind games with the kid and won't let him go until he is pushed to his breaking point. This movie is so good because it keeps you on the edge of your seat, wanting to see what happens next. What is also great is that you see hardly any blood and guts. It is scarier when the gruesome scenes are only implied. I absolutely love this movie!

Movie Review: "My mom told me never to do this"
Summary: 5 Stars

And mom was right and so is this white knuckle "thriller" with (dare I say it) C. Thomas Howell's finest performance as Jim Halsey, A twenty-something young man driving a car west to California for a delivery service. After coffee, cigarettes, and loud music fail to keep him from getting sleepy he stops to pick up a hitchhiker in the rain. Unfortunately for him the hitcher is Rutger Hauer and he is one mean dude. No one in modern cinema(80's on thru to be exact) gives off a more palatable sense of menace as Mr. Hauer gives in this tight wound little movie. Once he comes on screen, driping wet(he even makes rain water running off his nose look evil) you feel him in every frame even when he's not on screen. Mr Howell is pitch perfect as the young man who picks up this loony dude and like fly paper can't shake him. At points in this movie you feel horrible form him as one one believes him that the hitcher is is killer and not him. This movie follows no standard Hollywood plot and is very much the better for it. Not once in this film can you guess what is coming next. This is one that has gotten better with age. One of the 80's best little "thrillers"

Movie Review: Unmissable
Summary: 5 Stars

The Hitcher is one of the best films ever made and ultimately one of most overlooked as well. The premise of the film is very simple: Jim Halsey is driving a car cross country with plans of dropping it off at his destination when he comes across hitchhiker John Ryder, who seems suspicious from the start. It is incredibly tense and atmospheric and centres around a terrifying performance from Rutger Hauer as John Ryder, a mysterious drifter intent on following C. Thomas Howell's Jim Halsey and making his road trip one that he'll never forget. Most of the film's atmosphere radiates from Hauer as he scares both Howell and the audience with a simple glance which could mean anything and everything. Jennifer Jason Leigh makes an early appearance as a waitress dragged along for the ride after Howell stumbles upon the diner she works at. The performances of the three main actors are involving and it is very easy to feel sympathy for Howell, who has done nothing to deserve the torture he receives at the hands of Hauer, who makes for a terrific villain. A hidden gem and a great cult film, The Hitcher is fantastic.

Movie Review: More Than Just A Ride!
Summary: 5 Stars

One of the scariest movies I have ever seen, The Hitcher is relentless in its intensity. Jim Halsey (C. Howell) picks up a hitchhiker (R. Hauer) on his way to San Diego who soon admits he killed his last ride. Hauer says, "You know that driver from that last car? I cut off his legs". It doesn't take more than that before Jim is able to trick and force the 'hitcher' out of his car. Thinking that it's over, Jim soon sees the hitcher riding in another family's car, knowing he will kill them all. Reporting him to the police is of no use and even after they capture him, he pulls a shocking twist on everyone. Jim befriends a lonely waitress (J. J. Leigh) who believes his story, but soon she ends up in the middle (literally) between them (the most revolting scene in the film). It's a suspenseful, non-stop, killer maniac fright ride. It becomes clear the hitcher is out to frame Jim for multiple murders or kill him. The ending is just as frightening as the rest, but I guarantee you won't leave this film feeling good - just shaken up. Not for the squeamish, but maybe a good date movie.
