Movie Reviews of The Hitcher (Widescreen Edition)Movie Review: One star Summary: 1 StarsBecause Zero Stars wasn't an option.
Suspense/Horror movies are at a crossroads. The movie-mill films like this one insult your moviegoer who has a little more than average intelligence and a desire to combine thrills/chills with a believable production.
I watched this whole movie through, because I (shortly into it) began rooting for the Crazy Hitchhiker Man, simply because for the protagonists to make the insane decisions they make, escape alive, and procreate, would infect the gene pool with an offspring that would have a medical condition that prevented them from using logic and reason.
I'm not anti-popcorn movie, don't get me wrong. Its just when the characters do STUPID, STUPID things, over and over, there is only so much you can accept as being "under duress". This movie quickly makes you hate the two main characters, and cheer for their demise, which is the exact opposite effect I bet the director intended.
This is just a bad, bad movie.
Movie Review: Lethal And Jolting - One Of The Year's Top Horror Movies Summary: 5 Stars An improved version of the already high-caliber 1986 "Hitcher" starring Rutger Hauer, this new incarnation casts Sean Bean ("Lord Of The Rings", "The Dark", "Silent Hill") as an even deadlier and more twisted title villain, and Sophia Bush ("Stay Alive") and Zachary Knighton ("The Prince And Me") as young lovers Grace and Jim, who on a road trip encounter the hitcher in the middle of a rainstorm, and become the prime targets of his obsession.
The Hitcher has been upped to where he's about as dangerous as a human being can be without raising the question of the supernatural. No remorse, apparantly no fear of death or pain, disturbingly with no apparant motivation, indisputably evil, and yet retaining an undeniable charismatic edge, as well as a huge air of mystery (his background, and even his real name, are never revealed) the character slashes and shotgun-blasts his way into the upper tier as one of the most instantly memorable killers to rampage across the screen in recent years. Zachary Knighton and the smolderingly gorgeous and cute-as-a-button Sophia Bush are likable and believable as the main couple of the film. Strong performances are turned in by the rest of the cast as well, and the tight flow of the movie encompasses psychological terror and suspense, up-close visceral carnage, and some of the most intense and high-octane highway chase/battle action ever seen, way above that seen in many higher profile action blockbusters with five times the budget. It attains a highly active tension and tightness the likes of which have not quite been reached by many of its more famous horror-thriller hybrid peers.
"The Hitcher" delivers on all counts it takes on, and is highly recommended for fans of such movies as the '86 original, "Highwaymen" (by original "Hitcher" director Robert Harmon), the "Hills Have Eyes" movies, and "The Vanishing".
Movie Review: Horror fans might want to "hitch" a ride with this remake. Summary: 3 StarsTHE HITCHER is a 2007 remake of a little known Horror film of the same name. The movie was made back in the 1980's and it doesn't shock me that not too many people (mainly it seems the youth of today) knew about the original film. One of my friends was even shocked to find out (after watching the remake in theaters a few days before) that it was in fact a remake after all. Being the fact that they decided to remake THE HITCHER, it kind of comes as a surprise to me. After all, the original film wasn't a "mega hit" or anything.
Personally, I enjoyed the original enough when I was a kid to warrant a viewing of the new remake. Now that I've seen it, I'm happy to say that my feelings about the remake are just about the same as the my feelings about the original. It's nothing more than a good, fun Horror movie.
The plot is simple enough. Instead of just one main "good guy" and the lone creepy hitcher, we've got a slight change of direction. Now we have two "good guys" (a couple of College kids on their way for Spring Break vacation) and the lone creepy hitcher. Played in this remake by the talented Sean Bean from SILENT HILL and LORD OF THE RINGS fame.
Jumping ahead of some small plot details, the couple ends up with the hitcher in their car and soon enough, they find out it was a big mistake. The unknown hitcher is totally crazy and out of his mind. For a good part of the movie he stalks the couple, killing people along the way and setting up the couple for the local police dept. Eventually, things turn from bad to worse and now even the cops think the young couple is responsible for the deaths following the hitchers bloody trail.
What really makes THE HITCHER a creepy movie is that you never find out who he is, why he's stalking this young couple or why he seems to have amazing "abilities" during these random killings. Over all it's an okay remake that doesn't try to top the original and ends up being better in some areas while keeping the over all plot basically the same. The gore is a nice touch while keeping it's R rating. Some of the moments will be enjoyed by Horror fans, especially one scene with a large truck and a helpless victim tied up between the wheels and the cargo. Sick! So if your looking for a nice way to "kill" an evening with friends, THE HITCHER might be what your looking for. Horror fans and gore hounds check it out! Fans of the original might enjoy this nice remake too. Over all, I was pleased.
Movie Review: A Hundred Times Better Than The Original Summary: 4 StarsI saw the original years ago.
I wasn't impressed with it then,
sure Rutger Hauer was creepy,
but you could see him being crazy a thousand miles away, so it didn't catch you off-guard.
Naturally,
when the remake released I was apprehensive about picking it up.
I mean why remake a movie that wasn't that good to begin with.
The answer; to make it a hundred times better.
The much needed injection of action
puts the proverbial petal to the metal.
This flicks got more thrills, action, and blood than the original;
It's superior to it in every way.
Once the movie starts,(and it wastes no time doing that),
it doesn't let up until the credits roll.
This is the flick the term "Thrill ride" was invented for.
Character development, plot, purpose, and the law of physics
are tossed to the wind, in exchange for good fun ride.
(Half the time I was like "No Way!" & "This guy is unstoppable")
He is an enigma alright, and he will hunt you down, regardless.
Thrill after non-stop thrill,
will not only put you on the edge of you seat,
but will make you fall flat on your face,
so enjoy the ride to the carpet.
MORAL OF THE STORY:
Keep your eyes on the road, and break for no one.
Movie Review: Not a hitcher to pick up Summary: 2 Starsonce upon a time not so long ago, Hollywood execs gave the thumbs up to remake the classic mo vie Psycho. Since then, every classic horror movie has been fair game for new producers, directors and writers to have their way with. And thats where the pointless remake of The Hitcher comes in. As has been mentioned by countless other reviewers, Sean Bean in the place of Rutger Hauer is a noted loss, however the real issue with the remake is the changed storyline which is more of a blending of the original Hitcher and its direct to DVD sequel than anything new. The problem is that by making it a duo of good against a single evil, the tension is all but gone. The effects are very good, the chase is ok, but all in all even if you stop comparing the film to the original, the remake comes up one dimensionally flat. If you want a proper modern take on the premise of The Hitcher, see Highwaymen with Jim Caviezel. The story is compelling, the characters interesting and the whole thing comes off far better than even the few best elements of the Hitcher remake.
