Movie Reviews of The Hitcher (Widescreen Edition)

Movie Review: Stick With The Original
Summary: 3 Stars

The remake of the 80's "The Hitcher" was definitely worse than the original, which was a thrill ride of intensity and suspense and blood. The remake was okay, but lacked the intensity and the blood. It was okay, but far from great. Frankly, I would stick to the original, because it is much better and much scarier.

Movie Review: What you'd expect
Summary: 4 Stars

A young couple pick up a nutcase on a lonely stretch of highway.
He torments them and tries to kill them after making them suspects in several murders. No oscars here, but a good movie for its genre.

Movie Review: You want a Real Scary ride, please just stick with Rutger Hauer
Summary: 5 Stars

The remakes, some are good and some are well not good. Sean Bean had some big shoes to fill there is only one Hitcher and that is the one & only Rutger Hauer!!!

Movie Review: Better to Thumb a Ride with the Original
Summary: 3 Stars

As you might expect, this re-make isn't as good as the original. It duplicates the action of the 1999 Rutger Hauer version fairly closely, right down to the loping, bloody-jawed dogs in the police station. However this Hitcher attempts one crucial, modernizing twist. I'm not sure that the twist gives enough of a new slant on the action though to justify this re-make.

Sean Bean inherits Hauer's mantle as the inexorable killer here. He has a suitably chilling, chiseled look for the role. But the rest of the cast doesn't inspire the kind of sympathy that put us on the edge of our seats, fearing for their fate, in the earlier movie. The young man whom Bean singles out to bring his killing spree to endgame isn't given sufficient depth of vulnerable goodness this time around.

Perhaps what most diminishes this movie though is the amount of road-rage swearing that goes on. As in most movies that play for youthful appeal this way, the language just ends up trivializing the movie's characters and their tragic encounters. When faced with such diabolical evil as the Hitcher, it seems almost silly to respond with four-letter indignation. Stunned silence would be more appropriate and more moving.

However getting this DVD wouldn't be a complete waste. If you can't easily get hold of the original, this will deliver some scares and some gruesome visuals. There's no director commentary on the DVD, but there is a lot of other bonus material, including some interesting behind-the-scenes views of how those visuals were created.

Movie Review: HOLY S#$%
Summary: 5 Stars

The begining of the movie kills an innocent rabbit for no reason. Then the All American Rejects play and I groan. Boy did it pick up from there! Sean Bean gives one hell of a performance as hitchhiker with no name who just kills alot of people. I was so amazed at all the little twists and turns that went on thru out the movie. I actully felt trapped with the chracaters trying to search for a way out. I dont reveal to much but this movie needs to be seen by horror movie fans. They did an excellent job remaking a classic just like Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It was probably the greatest horror film of the year besides 1408.
