Movie Reviews of The HiddenMovie Review: Like Richard Laymon's FLESH, a Fun and Fast Film Summary: 4 Stars
What happens when a very good detective comes up against the nearly inexplicable? Well, in The Hidden you get a pretty good idea. For two weeks the city has been plagued by a vicious criminal. Prior to that, the man had been a normal law-abiding citizen. But as the police finally nab him in a big opening chase scene, an FBI agent shows up looking for him. For some reason, the fact that the man is dead does not end the case. The FBI agent is now looking for someone else who supposedly worked for him. And then they are looking for someone else. Are these people possessed? What is going on? Why is the FBI agent personally involved? All these questions and more are answered throughout the course of the movie. The plot is actually quite complex as we slowly learn what is going on. There was so much packed into this film I thought it must be at least three hours. Few movies can pull off that sort of packing. Add to the plot a very healthy dose of action and you get a really interesting film that never has the cheap feel of a B-movie.
Movie Review: The Movie that has been copied to death. Spoiler Summary: 4 Stars
As others have said, there have been many stories and movies regarding aliens taking over human bodies however... This movie was original, it was the first time that I remember seeing a film where the aliens were both good and evil and they both possessed humans. THis film showed and alien crimmial coming to earth and taking over normal humans, committing very violent crimes and when the human body is so abused and used up, the alien transfers into another body. This film was fun and exciting to watch. Fast past and action packed. The unfortunate side effect of this movie was the fact that hollywood would use it as a template to copy and make horrid films, like the First Power, Shocker and many others all predictable and boring. I have heard this film compared to the masterpeice Invasoin of the body snatchers. I can see how one can make that comparison but this movie is far different. This was an action movie. And\it was not predictable.
Great Film, I would definately recommend it.
Movie Review: Life in the Fast Lane Summary: 4 Stars
What's not to like about this movie! Alien zips around L.A. in a series of stolen Ferraris with classic 80's punk music blaring over the radio. Pursued by another alien, a cop out to revenge the murder of his family and partner. Mega shootouts, lots of guns, rocket launcher, and even a flamethrower.Kyle McLachlan (alien cop) and Michael Nouri (human partner) both play their parts with understated humor. Claudia Christian has a classic bit part as Brenda the stripper - that pose outside the club in her red go-go boots is awe-inspiring. The plot is basic run-of-the-mill science fiction, as the bad alien passes from one human body to another, satisfying a hungry appetite for drugs, violence and fast cars. The movie transcends the mundane because of its subtle humor and commentary on the mores of the times. Sex, drugs and rock 'n roll - just what every alien (and human) in the galaxy really wants. Definitely fun entertainment.
Movie Review: A campy classic Summary: 4 Stars
An underrated near classic, The Hidden is a B-movie that strives to be better than it should be, and it nearly succeeds on every level. Kyle MacLachlan stars as an otherworldly cop after a criminal alien lifeform that can jump from one person to another and has a taste for fast cars and heavy metal music. Michael Nouri stars as MacLachlan's human partner, and they work great together. While The Hidden is surprisingly well done, there are a few gripes; first off you can tell this movie was made in the 80's, and the relationship between MacLachlan and Nouri's daughter is never explained, not even in its straight to video sequel released a few years back (which was godawful), and the flamethrower is obviously foreshadowed in the beginning of the movie. All that aside, The Hidden is a surprisingly good sci-fi flick that fans of the Terminator series or the Aliens will enjoy.
