Movie Reviews of The HiddenMovie Review: Don't trust anybody! Summary: 4 Stars
What's that, you haven't heard of "The Hidden". Well I'm not surprised. I only discovered it by accident and was overjoyed to find another top flight Science Fiction film. It is difficult to pin down exactly what makes this film so good. Obviously a low budget flick, it still manages to grab your attention at the completely sociopathic actions of the bad guy.
The story concerns a cop and an FBI agent's attempts to track down a series of criminals. Each criminal has exactly the same M.O. which is a characterised by rampant hedonism and a complete disregard for the value of human life, including their own. As it turns out these criminals are all the one basic bad guy, a parasite from outer space. He can support a human body beyond the normal point of death but past a given stage is forced to vacate the host and find another.
Our heros have a difficult time capturing him due to the body switching. Eventually things start to heat up as the alien decided he wants to enjoy the privileges of being president and so takes steps to inhabit one of the presidential campaigners.
"The Hidden" includes some touching scenes with the cop's family as well as some graphic ones depicting the violence of the alien. It is a movie in the tradition of the "B" grade sci fi genre but takes it's subject seriously. Check it out, I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
Movie Review: Sci-Fi Campy Fun - 1980s Style Summary: 4 Stars
I had never heard of THE HIDDEN. When my husband put it on last night, I thought "What is this, a cheesy shoot`em up cop flick? A `B' horror movie?" But I have to admit, I quickly changed my tune. THE HIDDEN is all of those things, and much, much more. In fact, I really enjoyed this movie.
In THE HIDDEN, law abiding citizens are suddenly going on wild, violent killing sprees and then turning up dead. There is a pattern to these outbreaks; they started up north in Washington, have made their way through Oregon, and are now happening in LA. An LA cop and an FBI agent team up to catch the latest killer and put an end to all the bloodshed. But, there is something else going on here, something more than meets the eye. Something is very, very wrong, and it must be stopped. Immediately.
THE HIDDEN is bloody, violent, with innumerable chase scenes. It has a campy, well-worn plot. The special effects, well, they aren't, not even for the `80s. And the hair...you gotta love the hair. But THE HIDDEN is very entertaining and just plain fun. The twist at the end is suspected, but plays out a bit differently than originally thought.
THE HIDDEN is a hidden gem. If you like cop thrillers, B-movies, sci-fi, or enjoyable, light evenings at home, try THE HIDDEN.
Movie Review: "Are we talking spacemen?" Summary: 4 Stars
Absolutely awesome sci-fi film! The acting by Kyle MacLachlan is right on point. Michael Nouri who plays detective Beck does it with believability(its real hards to believe this is the same guy from Flashdance)thats rarely seen in this type of movie. The movie is mostly fast paced but at the right times it has extremley poignant moments. This movie has an in-your-face assault on the senses that keeps you riveted. Next to Invasion of the Body Snatchers this has to be the best 'alien using and abusing human bodies' movie to come along. Everyone who was taken over by the alien really played it like the real thing(even the dog). Most sci-fi buffs know of this film, but I'm surprised how many dont know of it. The chase scenes alone rival or surpass some "mainstream" movies. All the elements come together creating an interesting and action filled picture. Also, a great pondering ending. Love that unintended eighties feel this has. The dvd sound is good, but the aspect ratio of the film was played around with. That doesn't hurt it too much, but a corrected extra special edition is well needed. Don't waste your time on "The Hidden part 2". Its a mess.
Movie Review: I'm not coming out yet.. Summary: 4 Stars
The Hidden is a very entertaining film, it starts off with a bang..or should I say bank, which is where the shooting begins, The plot/story is simple, alien on earth moving from body to body and using it for evil purposes. The film doesn't really explain how the alien came here. The start of the film the cops are chasing the alien (Chris Mulkey) who is driving a black ferrarri with heavy metal music blasting. The alien's favorite 2 earthly things. He doesn't make it through the cops' roadblock and ends up in the hospital where we see the alien in it's true form. I must say it was dissapointing, the alien looked like a snail without it's shell (i'm picky). We then see it go into the other patients mouth who quickly comes to life and leaves the hospital.Enter Kyle McLachlan who play the "good" alien FBI who has been pursuing the "bad" alien for 9 years..(our time). An enjoyable movie with good acting and a good ending. What I didn't understand was what was the connection between Kyle McLachlan's character and the daughter of Michael Nouri?? anyway..good entertainment!
Movie Review: Something Hidden, Something Special. Summary: 4 Stars
One of the better 80's Sci-Fi flicks before the advent of CGI. THE HIDDEN is an intelligent and fun piece of filmaking perhaps made as a protest to films like E.T. or STARMAN. Although modest in budget, the production values are excellent (car crashes, stunt work and special effects) and the cast and script are top notch. Kyle MacLachlan (Gallager) is an FBI agent (or is he?) assigned to track down an alien life form going through a multitude of human hosts, inhabiting a body and going on a destructive path of stealing fancy sports cars and robbing banks. With disregard to the human host during these crime sprees, the alien lets the body be destroyed in various ways (like letting it be shot, or crashing it in a car) so he can escape and find another host and start the cycle over again. All this is done in horror yet in a humorous undertone as the alien chooses a stripper, a police detective and even a pet dog as it's victims. A genuine type B-movie, it is nontheless a fun, smart, not-too-campy, sci-fi horror film. Good support work from Michael Nouri (*61) and Claudia Christian (Babylon 5).
